Mirai in HBO documentary

Watching this with my wife now. Love seeing Ryan creating a bonsai sitting out there, inspired by the wild. WOW. Amazing film.

I really enjoyed the film. The Weyerhaeuser stories were great, Beth Moon's photographs are just amazing and really shocking seeing the attack on Mirai. Ryan's work always shows so well, and this documentary is just another example of how talented he is. I just love Ryan's work, and this made me have an even greater respect for all his hard work.

Trees kill lots of people every year.

Maybe they aren't accidents...
Legitimately one of my fears living in Oregon. When we were looking for a house some years ago the real estate agents would call singleton big trees on the property ‘widow makers’.

Did anybody watch? I really enjoyed it.

I found it interesting how Ryan talked about his return to Japan and being rejected. Also found the discussion about the vandalism and his favorite tree Baker moving. We all have trees in our collection that we have special feelings towards due to time spent or feelings of achievement. They didn’t dive into it but did they find out who was responsible for the vandalism?
I haven’t watched the documentary but I find it in poor taste that the vandalism keeps coming up. It was his ex-wife Chelsea Straughtman who vandalized Mirai, it wasn’t some random incident.

But I also, to some extent really felt for his ex. She was clearly going through a manic and borderline psychosis episode. It’s sad when you see people lose their shit. I don’t fully buy that behavior just forms out of thin air, but I, nor anyone else will everyone truly understand what they as a once couple went through to lead to that point. I don’t dare to speculate either.
Same.. having a toddler I can only imagine the heartbreak she went through, especially when you see stuff like this: https://www.honeyfund.com/wedding/chelsandtaft and https://www.instagram.com/p/CCl0YCSh2ck/?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

I don’t know anything about what their marriage was like, but just knowing what she contributed to the making of Mirai and being denied a single penny of it as a single mom who gave up her career for Mirai sounds cruel and traumatizing in itself.

Including any of that without additional context or background seems in poor documentary taste (thanks @Sansokuu).

I liked the film, but it seemed very disjointed to me at times.

FWIW, I took my comment down. I felt a bit strange commenting on that situation. Don't have the entire picture. I was aware of the sites that Sansoku posted. Domestic situations like that are very hard to see into.

Swapped your quote out, so as to not lose context.

The honeyfund and Instagram threads about Chelsea are bizarre to say the least. Rather unconvincing of a calm and serene victim of various traumas, spousal abuse (with nothing to support the claims) meanwhile the CCTV footage shows a mother taking axes onto the property, hacking everything to pieces, including her son’s bedroom, his toys, everything, and with blood all over the walls, etc., then leaving the property while naked.

Not being there probably saved Taft’s life. A mother who can do that to her own son… heartbreaking….

You were right still, whether you leave the comment up or not. The video footage shows a dangerous and seriously disturbed person who needs help. I hope she has sought help and that Ryan and Taft are safe moving forward.

I guess that might be where I get lost. Not so much a documentary, but more of an artsy film of commentary towards a common topic.
That's my conclusion as well. It's a nice watch, but I didn't learn anything about trees and it didn't seem to document anything. It's more a biographical movie around people who do stuff with trees.

I wasn’t aware this was formally confirmed as I could not find definitive proof, so thanks for confirming.

Nobody will know what went on but the two of them. If she’s sick she should get help to become stable to hopefully reinstate rights to see her child. Courts are typically pro-female in these arenas, so any ruling has more information behind it than we know. If a male did what she did he’d be in the newspaper and labeled dangerous, not have pals setting up go fund me accounts.

“Abusive relationship” … that’s a big accusation.

Didn’t turn out so well for Amber Heard…….

Like bonsai, it's really NOT about trees. It's about people and relationships, their lives. Trees are the medium of communication and motivators for people. Trees are a symbol of something deeper. The black pine bonsai piece shows that very well. That tree is symbolic of a particularly bad time in American history, as well as a deeper statement of generational relationships.

Not taking sides at all here. But you have no idea what happened beyond the CCTV footage. There are ALWAYS 2 sides to the story. That fund was setup a couple years before this movie was even filmed.
