New content from Mirai…

Of course we're not. The "spiritual" audience of bonsai is pretty large. The yoga crowd and apparently the modern dance crowd see a lot in it too. The National Bonsai and Penjing museum has "yoga amongst the bonsai" days, as well as "forest bathing days" for folks who draw spirituality from the bonsai and their settings and surroundings. Those of us who actually make bonsai are like the old elephant trainers in circuses. We know what is actually going on with them, as opposed to viewers who don't see the elephant shit...
Hmm this is an interesting take... As a spiritual person I've kind of wondered just how connected to the spiritual the practice can be... I feel as though the intent of control of basically infusing this life with your intentions and being able to surround yourself with objects of great focus could be powerful feeling.

Granted I'm still quite new to the practice so I could always run into a new experience that changes my views on it, I just enjoy spending time amongst trees so either way it truly won't matter in the end... As for the dancing... Odd

As much as this isn’t my thing either, I think we can be a little more accepting of any outlier niche interests like these. After all, bonsai in itself is one of those as well.
I am not sure I understand the point you are making here. I should like it because bonsai is not mainstream?
That makes no sense to me.

Not at all, you are free to dislike anything you want. Who am I to say what you should like and dislike?

I’m only illustrating that bonsai is one of those interests a lot of people might raise their eyebrows at as well. The fact that you don’t understand/feel attracted to someone else’s interest doesn’t automatically mean it’s complete baloney. I don’t know the ins and outs of earth dance (nor do I have the interest to find out). This means I am looking at something I am not educated to form a well founded opinion on.

Of course we can poke some fun at it, for some laughs and giggles from other Bnutters. That’s all fine. We’re a free and open platform.
Just want to point out that if these dancers (or Mirai) were to read our jokes they might feel a bit misunderstood in the same way that our uncle laughed and joked about our bonsai practice at that birthday party. 😉

And @leatherback this is not an attempt to “correct” you. It’s just a general comment about the way some people jump to judgement too quickly. All you did was simply voice your dislike, which is your “goed recht”.

fair enough.
Not making fun of it myself ;).
People should do what they feel good about (as long as it does not interfere with the ability of other people to do their thing)

You miss the point. Bonsaiists do appreciate the spirituality of their trees, BUT they also appreciate how those trees were made. They realize there is more pain and perseverance in them than meets the eyes of most of those who don't actually make bonsai. That branch that looks so effortless in its age and movement? THAT took 25 years to achieve through painstaking detailed pruning, feeding and understanding of how the tree works. The yoga pants crowd only sees the branch, Bonsai people see the effort.

I think people miss the point. I don’t think people who walk, sit, and lay down day to day would understand how good this makes your body feel. And the patience and silence that calms the body. I like a lot of you but there is no reason to poke fun at people expressing themselves through movement by themselves. I get it but this stuff is actually really good for the body and mind. I can understand it looks silly but so does a lot of stuff we do without being aware. Be open and inquisitive to understanding perspectives.

I have no idea what this is, but to me it seems someone is bored with “just” bonsai. I have never been a fan of Ryan but perhaps he is bored of bonsai, but it’s how he makes money so he is still doing it.
A man who has and is currently dedicating his life and legacy to bonsai hardly seems bored.

Anyone can like or dislike anything, but when i follow a bonsai page i expect to see bonsai content, when i follow a car page i expect cars, so people will react when the content of tha page is not what one would expect... They even closed comments when they posted it already expecting negative comments. So why post it there?

My guess is there are plenty of "the yoga pants crowd" who are well aware of the effort it takes to master a discipline.

Being able to move like that doesn't happen overnight and having proper form takes time and dedication. To each their own.

Not really. I don't think they really understand the process any more than I understand becoming a Yoga master. I had a Yoga instructor who lived down the street. She was unaware of what was going on with bonsai just like any other 'civilian.' She knew it required "patience" (which what EVERYONE says when they hear you do bonsai) That's like saying yoga requires you to be flexible...

I was only trying to say that some yoga people are just as dedicated to their art form or activity as you or others in this forum are to bonsai. Not that they would understand bonsai as a practice or craft.

I think maybe we are saying the same thing, lol.

In my ever so humble opinion I think this video just comes out of left field. You can draw all sorts of parallels between any disciplines but that doesn’t mean that clumping them together isn’t bound to feel a bit out of place. I love fly fishing and could draw some parallels between the hobbies (lifestyles) but I’m pretty sure unless you participate in both activities a video put out by Mirai featuring Oregon steelhead fishing would leave most scratching their heads. Would I enjoy it?, sure. Would everyone else? 🤷🏻‍♂️

The video description makes it seem more like a political statement; of a kind I dont care for.
Id be curious what he would say motivated him to release this, though.

It uses possibly political language, but it's unclear what he's actually advocating for. It's just vaguely about "activism." It gives me D.E.I. vibes, but I could be wrong. I'm not going to read anything into it until I see an overt statement in support of a particular policy decision.
