Mame pots on a mini pottery wheel

Plaster draws moisture from the clay and releases it with no agent. And it is released it right away when you need to work on it or attach it right away. Except for self hardening, oven baked and play clays, all pottery molds are made of either plaster or bisque-ware clay for this reason. Also, although silicone can be used for a few things, you have to either flex it, spoiling the design, or use a release agent which interferes with connecting pieces. I have pottery molds that have been used hundreds of times.
Only a potter could know this.

Silicone could have it's use but not in this situation. One could make a model, then cast a mold of that model. You would have a mold of that said piece.

If you want to go into production you take that original mold and ensure it's as perfect as it can be. Then you make silicone mold of that original plaster mold. That original plaster mold is now the master mold. The silicone molds are molds of the master mold. You can now make an infinite amount of plaster molds from the silicone mold and each will be identical. Instead of working with one mold you can now work with a dozen at the same time and pull out the same exact piece from each mold. This particularly works well with slip casting........which I plan to get into later this summer for a particular pot I want to make and mass produce.

Stay tuned ;)

I finished this pot up a couple days ago. I got some underglaze in because I want to start painting on some pots. I knew I had some white clay, but didn't know what type. When I ordered it I told the woman on the phone I need the cheapest white body clay you have so I could use it for mold making. Last night I looked at the clay number and saw that this clay body is a low firing clay.....really low. So this pot will be a test subject for my painting and will eventually be a keeper. This clay after fully matured has a 15% absorption rate which is quite high....almost equivalent to terra cotta. Still a nice looking pot, let's see how it looks after I do a little painting on it.
