I too love their bark, fruit, etc. In fact, they have a lot of good qualities for bonsai. But the flowers and (as with any pear really) lack of "twiggyness" ruins them for me.
Have you ever actually smelled one lol? Maybe a bonsai-sized one won't be as bad, but there are 10 massive ones planted around campus and when they are all in flower its horrible.

No, but I understand that they smell like rotten fish and yes even... semen! Lovely combo I am sure!! 
As far as lack of "twiggyness" not sure. Yes they are coarse by nature, but the one Bill has looks pretty well ramified to me. I saw this one in person at the 2014 Nationals. Superb! I think larger sizes may be much better again due to their coarseness and lack of very fine twigs.

......And to think that about 10 years ago I cut down a pear tree and removed it to make way for a garden. I was not thinking......

I can easily collect you a couple wild bradford pairs in the spring. id have to do some looking for a decent enough one to collect, but I got a spot with a bunch of wild ones very close to me. I can send you photos of potentials as I come across them, if you are at all interested.

LOL ok thank you Waltron. Suddenly a ton of pears have potentially fallen upon me! Sure let me see also what you have. Who's pear will MACH5 choose?? Tune in next spring to find out!

well i did a quick look through my photos, thought I had a couple photos of some already, but i guess not. here is a crab apple that makes yellow apples, and a hawthorne that Im not happy about my chops but they are in the same field area as all the bradfords. its great field.. there is another kind of haw, and tons of red crabs, and the ground makes naturally stunted trees and roots in this area. excited to go looking now as i know I have a few pears marked already. I think that crab is on the collection list for sure this year.. not sure about the haw.. its trenched and undercut already and doing well but not really sure its worth it or not.. bark is nice.. trunk is straight, though there is some taper.. and i like haws. any one care to chime in with ruthless opinion on these two? maybe some opinion on where to chop?

Thanks for sharing Waltron. I'd definitely be interested in that crab if you decide not to keep it. Not sure that it is worth the effort on that haw.
