I don't know if it's that, or they won't send sap in a downward direction.The cambium appearently can be broken easily and bending them too much may break the cambium beyond healing.
I'd love to see a sharper bend downward where the lower branches leave the trunk... good start, though.

Sorce, I don't make stuff up. I've never seen one that had downward sloped branches. Really, about the only way I've seen them do well is to have the upward sloping branches. Even bending them horizontal seems to cause problems.Nice Bro!
