It's turned into a tree I see! When do you plan on doing a chop?
Pre spring 2019 prob at the second change of direction. Or air layer that off next year. It's turned into a tree I see! When do you plan on doing a chop?
That has not been my experience with cork bark type elms. Tried several air layers on this and all failed. Cuttings in a misting bed of 1 year old wood, at 5 minute intervals produced rootsI wouldn't chop it, better to do an airlayer. Elms sprout roots well even in big girth, so that "beast" won't have any problem, and you'll get and extra free mature tree

Yes, it appears there is no reason to do any type of movement until the very base/ first section is as thick as you want it. You just lose the taper and movement as it thickens in ground.Funny how it grew three all the movement and taper it had. The good news is it has plenty of power to heal the next chop.. I think I would go lower than last time.
Second this. Is it even bonsai-able at this point without a friend help digging.I wouldn't chop it, better to do an airlayer. Elms sprout roots well even in big girth, so that "beast" won't have any problem, and you'll get and extra free mature tree
