Yikes.. hopefully it had strong roots? It may be able to bud from a node below the break

I have gotten the same results. struck cuttings but no air layer. Please note the cuttings take longer than normal to root. My average is 6-10 weeks. It took mine 12 weeks to start to root. How long for yours?

I wish JMs were as easy to root as elms. I sneeze and I have rooted elm cuttings but I have JM cuttings in a humid environment for moths and they still don’t root. But I guess that is what makes JMs my white whale.

Do you have much experience with fireglow ? I have one I planted in the ground two years ago I have been debating taking layers from. Not sure how well it reduces though. It will be great for free materials as is very healthy and growing like a weed but I don’t want to spend time and effort on something that will be very leggy and a waste.

I've not worked with trying to reduce one yet. I am thinking when I do it'll be a larger tree, > 24"

I tried some HW cuttings this winter. Most cultivars failed but some success with Ukigumo, Tobiosho, Saiho, Goshiki Kotohime, Katsura, Sekka Yatsubusa and Oridono Nishiki.

Tsukasa Dwarf in particluar seems really promising. Roots agressively in just a few weeks with appealing, small leaves. MrMaple had it available earlier this spring:

I'm impressed you got Shin Hikasa to root. What was your approach?

I had them in 90% perlite, 10% seived sphagnum. Took about 3 weeks to a month in a plastic trash bag tent. I also had one just straight up in 100% pumice uncovered that was an experiment with 1 and it struck, wasn't even fine pumice. I had 1 in bonsai mix because I cut it later then the rest, and stuck it in a random existing bonsai pot and that struck to proving it's not picky at all. I used hormex number 8, used angled cut under node and kept that angle parallel to the floor when planting. Personally it was one of my easiest, and I will put it down as one of the easier ones, can't say the same for its parent Higasayama or related Ikandi, Disco, alpenweiss etc, but I expect they should be the same. At least two of them are not seigen. Possibly Deshojo. Seigen is pink afaik

i have a few deshojo, they def get pinker then the deshojo, and beni maiko(being the brightest in spring), and all the other reds. these three pictures are all from the same tree, they bud pink(not red like deshojo and maiko), get red and start to green. I wanna say it holds the pink maybe just a couple weeks. i'll try to have a comparison of all side by side around the same time in spring.
