Japanese Maples that Root from Cuttings

Yes, it's a bit late in the season, so they will have to be babied.

These are being rooted in my basement. Those that root will stay down in the basement until temps hit a constant 50 degrees next year to safely move out side.
What kind of light do you give them through winter? And do they grow much for you in the basement?

I have an LED grow station in the basement. They are provided light until their leaves drop. This late in the season they don't grow much at all, but if I can keep them alive to make it to spring they have a head start on the seedlings that germinate next season.

I'm only on year 2 of trying to propagate from cuttings, but I'm also seeing big benefits from lighting. I'll find out just how much this coming spring. One interesting thing is that different cultivars take substantially different amounts of time to set new buds, and then open them. The ones that take longer seem less able to prep for winter and survive it. By placing under lights, with 16 - 18 hour simulated days, they all seem to get to that first flush of growth + bud set. I'm optimistic most will make it to spring. Last year most of mine did not put out a second flush in the fall, and also never woke up in the spring.

Unfortunately my cuttings are not allowed in the house. So my setup is in the garage:

Has anyone attempted Noel yet? It's a variegated sport from Shin Deshojo.

I'm also curious whether anyone has had success with any of the Sieboldianum cultivars. I attempted to layer "Little Leaf" from Conifer Kingdom this year but it bridged the cut.

Shirasawanum cultivars are another I don't remember seeing in the lists.

Here's a shot of my 'Bonfire' air layer today. Originally layered in 2021.

FWIW, this is 'Bonfire' according to Maplestone Ornamentals, and entirely different from my 'Bonfire' from Mendocino Maples... lol

Adding one more to the list. I haven't done cuttings yet, but it's air layered well.

AP - Gold Digger

I love the bark color and foliage on this one. Fall colors were great too.

Updated table. Slow year for me as I had quite a bit of travel. I lost a lot of small material (cuttings, small layers, and grafts) this past winter. Being in Georgia, I normally put everything on the ground with some leaves/mulch and it they are normally fine. This past Christmas it got down to single digits and I guess i should have protected more. Not a major loss but had hoped to share/trade some material. I experimented a lot with the medium and location to mixed results. I am likely to stop adding new cultivars and focus on what I have unless it is one I am looking to replace or truly different.

different than mentioned that was layered this year:
Tobiosho - 1 month 20 days
Summer gold - 1 month/easy
Ikandi - easy

Cuttings that took, all using groddan gro-blocks
Ibo Nishiki
Ikandi
Shin hikasa
Mila
Naruto trident

Separated a Fascination today. Got a lot of callusing, twice the size of the trunk, this thing took the longest to root this year. Started May 1st, separated with minimal roots,

Anyone try Mizuho beni or Yezo nishiki varieties?

Just saw them on Conifer Kingdom's web site.
I purchased a couple of small ones of those varieties along with an orange dream and a Katsura.
If I can get my technique together on the easy ones and am successful, Ill try these new ones and see if they are successful but it might take me a couple years to get confident with taking cuttings.
If the cuttings work, Ill try air layering them which I have more confidence in my technique and have been successful doing.

Not really what you're asking, but Mizuho Beni air layers easily. Even on relatively small branches. I haven't tried cuttings.
