Japanese Flowering Quince cuttings in training.

thumblessprimate1, ]@bonhe[/USER] , have you ever had branches that pop up from the roots late spring or summer that would have blooms the same season?
The suckers will come up from the rootage but no flower until next season.

I have to show you this. Here's a funny sucker, that bloomed less than 12 months apart. I guess technically, it's in a different season.

I've seen this with other TN around. The sucker would have branch let's like this one.

Yes, I think it was into different season.
The weird thing is that the flower buds had long stem!!! (yellow circles) I never saw that in mine.

It supports my hypothesis of "basal dominance" (not "apical dominance" ) in some species. I am still in the progression to clarify this.

Glad to be of some help. These flower buds are different aren't they! They sometimes pop up on new extending growth. I removed a couple last fall after shortening some growth on another quince. I can't remember if those flower buds had long stems or not. Will have to pay more attention next time. I think these flower buds have two downsides. They might not be tough enough when small to tolerate freezes. Also, the blossom is not as beautiful. Perhaps less petals?

This quince has another flower this afternoon.

It would be alike miniature roses. Because of long flower stems, the flowers tend to face downward.

Perhaps less petals?
I don't think so.

Some flowers for Bonhe :) Wanted to take this photo before the rain today...
Thanks Greg.
You have very nice flowers there. I can see it is trying to show up the red stripe!!

This airlayering one is having flower buds. I will not remove them !

To choose the branch for airlayering or cutting, I need two phases:

1- In the winter, when it has no more leaves. It is easy to see the structure. Like this branch.

or this branch

2- In the flowering time. I will see the flower pattern of those branches chosen in the 1st phase. If they are matched what I want ----> perfect!
If not ----> will change my plan at that time.

It consumes a lot of time and effort, but it is worth and very fun!

You really appreciate these blossoms. You're making me look at mine with more attention.
hahaha! Yes, I love to admire the flowers in all phases because they teach me a lot of things in life. It is why I never remove the flower buds in training plants even though the tree is still very premature like the one in post # 175.
