Japanese Flowering Quince cuttings in training.

Yes this is one of them. I think it has some chojubai blood in it but I can't remember. I crossed it back to chojubai this spring and it has a big fat fruit on it now. I can send you some seeds if you want.
Very nice!
I love your offer, but I can not take it! Thanks anyway.

I am just wanting to get more quince again... I mean to hit Brent up sometime soon. Maybe get some contorted and 'Not Minerva'... I just love em!

I am also thinking of getting contorted quince for a while now. I saw contorted quince with white and pink flowers, I think. The reason I am hesitate is that I am afraid of being overwhelmed !!

Wise thinking I think.

I decided not taking contorted quince, but I took other interesting stuff to which I could not decline! The ume rootstocks! :)

I strolled around my garden this morning and looked at this Toyo nishiki "Nichi-Getsu-Sei".
It is time to do air layering for it.
This picture was taken on 2/6/16. It has at least 5 places to do air layering.

The first branch had this type of flowers (picture was taken on 2/10/16)

This morning. I can see it has a good movement of the future trunk line!

This tree has a lot of flower buds at this time. I don't think it will give me flowers during Tết!

A group of flowering quince came from the roots escaped from one flowering quince pot which used to be there 3 years ago. I will remove them into 3 - 4 groups for bonsai purpose soon!

I will have a lot of flowers in few weeks.

Very nice flower. I can see it has light pink in the border of the petals.
Cám ơn tiểu đệ. Chúc mừng năm mới!!!!

I start new year with a hybrid project on flowering quince.
I found very interesting flower this morning on the Toyo nishiki "Nichi-Getsu-Sei". It has 3 dark ivory color stripes (arrows) which I never saw in the past.

I took one flower from Chojubai quince.

Side by side comparing.

I touched Chojubai to Nichi-Getsu-Sei. I did the same thing to the white flower of Nichi-Getsu-Sei.

I think I know how to get the flowering quince bonsai with short internode intervals.
The air layering one is having a lot of flower buds at this time. Will I remove those buds? No, I will not.
It will be trained as cascade one.

p/s: I did not see the root hit to the container yet, but I believe it has root.

What have you learned about getting short internodes? I haven't tried air layering TN, but I bet they root easily. Last year while approach grafting a branch, the branch started sprouting a root where it had been scraped. It was kept in a shady humid spot.

"thumblessprimate1, What have you learned about getting short internodes?
To avoid apical dominance:
- Let the branches grow horizontally, or
- Keep removing apical bud.

Yes, they do. I mostly did air layering for Nichi- Getsu-Sei because I can get full patterns of flowers (with cutting, I will take a risk due to old wood cutting)

@bonhe , have you ever had branches that pop up from the roots late spring or summer that would have blooms the same season? I think they are capable of having blooms the following spring.

The suckers will come up from the rootage but no flower until next season.
