Japanese Flowering Quince cuttings in training.

Bonsai Nut, post: 403123, member: 3"]What soil mix are you using for your Chojubai?
This Chojubai pot is an exchanged gift with Dick Benbow (WA) more than 2 years ago, so I can not tell you what kind of soil mix it is! But I can see lava cinder, pumice in ratio 1:1. I understand in WA, this soil mix will be good because it has a lot of rain up there.
In my area, I have been using pumice: pine bark 2:1 for flowering quince.

Do you protect it from the sun in the summer?
Yes, I do. I place it under the guava tree with misty system 4 times a day (in the summer)

The Chojubai still has flowers and flower buds at this time of the year. The temperature is 40 degrees F at 3:45 pm!

Toyo nishiki "Nichi-Getsu-Sei" is loosing its leaves at this time. In the same time, I can see some flower buds start swelling up at one or two trees.

This Nichi-Getsu-Sei quince is ready for blooming in a few weeks.

This one will give me a surprise this year. I want to see what kind of flower it has. It was cutting from the Nichi-Getsu-Sei quince more than 2 years ago.

It has a lot of flower buds at this time.

Wonderful time of the year!
This spring I cross pollinated many quinces. Chojubai x japonica, Chojubai x small red japonica.
Medium orange japonica x chojubai, White speciosa x medium orange japonica, Pink x superba x small red japonica.
I did some a few years ago and some of them turned out very nicely. One has purple new leaves!

This one is also a cutting from Nichi-Getsu-Sei quince more than 2 years ago, but does not have any flower bud yet.

It has a lot of suckers from the roots. It is possible a good candidate for inverse root cutting!

I could not believe how well my Chojubai did this summer in Vegas. It only got shelter during the 118F+ days Other than that it was full sun. Grew like a weed. I only wish I would have known they liked it here before now... :( Nothing like wasting the last 15 years that I have lived here...
