I go to the fitness club and lift real heavy weights to be able to handle my large trees without help. No kidding.
I figure, we should train our bodies as much as our bonsai. Heavy lifting is really good for men! It increases bone density, keeps testosterone levels high, strengthens your internal organs and the ladies- I mean bonsai like it too.
The trick is doing it regularly and knowing what your body can and cannot handle. Your body begins to stop working when you begin to stop working.
Spoken by someone who may have never had a worked related injury that takes six months to get over, someone who is on the good side of fifty, and someone who by the end of the day is not too tired to think about going to the gym and busting their butt for another two hours just to come up with carpal tunnel syndrome, torn rotator cuff, and a hernia. These are the kinds of things your body likes to do to you the older you get.
I used to think that I was going to be able to go bear hunting with a stick till I was in my eighties, LOL, at 67 I can hardly drag my fattening ass up the stairs, my back hurts, my knees hurt, I can't hold on to anything anymore, I can't see, can't hear, can't pee, can't poop, can't sleep at night, can't stay awake all day, can't eat what I want to, can't chase girls, can't do anything if I catch one, and I can't remember shit. I can't feel my hands, my left shoulder hurts, my right shoulder doesn't work, both legs constantly itch (agent orange), my tongue's asleep and my teeth itch. Most of the time I feel like a combination of a piano player in a marching band and a one legged man in a butt kicking contest------on a good day.
Other than that I'm doing great.

My wife keeps saying: "if you cannot carry it alone it is not a bonsai"
Wow, so much to look forward to!!!I used to think that I was going to be able to go bear hunting with a stick till I was in my eighties, LOL, at 67 I can hardly drag my fattening ass up the stairs, my back hurts, my knees hurt, I can't hold on to anything anymore, I can't see, can't hear, can't pee, can't poop, can't sleep at night, can't stay awake all day, can't eat what I want to, can't chase girls, can't do anything if I catch one, and I can't remember shit. If you go to the gym a few times a week you're going to be more resilient and more resistant to injury. Keeping in shape as you age is going to prevent a lot of those old age problems and it doesn't take a lot of work, just keeping at it. I think if one can spend hours on bonsai surely one could spend almost as much on maintaining their body. It's the only one we get.
aha! so now we know who the motivation is behind the visits to the fitness club![]()
This is absolutly critical. Since the hernia I've been doing strength training and now have no problem lifting that @#$%^ing pine on a rock or any other large bonsai. Thanks to "the Slow Burn Fitness Revolution" I'm only in the fitness center 20 minutes 3 days per week. It really works, with vast clinical trails to back it up. At 73, taking no meds, nothing hurting and everything working, I have no complaints. The key is to keep the correct body form when lifting, so that injury is avoided.

Vance,
how can you ever suggest that a person of female gender is wrong. The PC police will get you soon.
Well, in reality she has not much of a word in the garden. On the other side I have no word in the house.
