Looks like a pretty drastic root pruning. Have you considered doing some top pruning on the tree as well? It may help with the recovery
The tree in my last post, 140? I'll reduce the central leader this season, might air layer it? All the trunks will be reduced eventually. I think the tree will do well regardless. I've got about 12 clones from one maple, they grow like crazy.Looks like a pretty drastic root pruning. Have you considered doing some top pruning on the tree as well? It may help with the recovery
It should develop a nice nebari with that level of reduction. It will be a sweet treeThe tree in my last post, 140? I'll reduce the central leader this season, might air layer it? The planned side died but the tree grew well last season. Nebari looks like a crab , I nicked it a little and applied some clonex. I'll take some cuttings this season to have for grafts at the next repot. A couple of buds are showing on the lower bare trunk. Maybe the cuttings can double for root grafts and branches if needed??A.P. Nishiki Gawa, pine bark. Ground layered, not great, not the worst. Planning on building my tree from the shorter right trunk. Airlayer the other side. If it lives of course, hahaha

In my experience, Nishiki gawa roots very easily from cutting so you should have no problem getting stock for root graftsThe planned side died but the tree grew well last season. Got this big guy potted up today, roots were better than expected, long way to go though. Really looking forward to seeing this one on the benches!Found an awesome Kuro Hime landscape maple today. Looks like a bonsai before any work!

Found a pic of this one during the air layering, Sept 2017, then todayRepotting season underway... I'm happy with the progress here. I know my trees could use more development in grow out containers but I've got to church up the place,

Cut back and attempting a mid season thread graft for this first lower right branchWinter clean up and documentation, little guy that I kept fighting for a different leader, finally game up and went with the side branch, standard AP, airlayer so the nebari is solidView attachment 521270View attachment 521271View attachment 521272View attachment 521273
@Piedmont Bonsai you warning on this root reduction is appreciated, I certainly had to give it a few extra waterings this spring. Growing strong, I'll probably reduce that leader later this summer.Repotted this layer that had grown into the ground. Surprisingly I had to cut back way further than I thought I would've. Hopefully set up for future success.

Unfortunately no. I think I crushed the stem trying to secure it into position, I'll have to try again next springCan you tell if your thread graft took?
New grow tents are doing well. Mostly AP cuttings about 2 months inAlmost finished setting up a more permanent propagation tent. Mostly repurposed materials.
