Looks like a pretty drastic root pruning. Have you considered doing some top pruning on the tree as well? It may help with the recovery

The tree in my last post, 140? I'll reduce the central leader this season, might air layer it? All the trunks will be reduced eventually. I think the tree will do well regardless. I've got about 12 clones from one maple, they grow like crazy.

It should develop a nice nebari with that level of reduction. It will be a sweet tree

A.P. Nishiki Gawa, pine bark. Ground layered, not great, not the worst. Planning on building my tree from the shorter right trunk. Airlayer the other side. If it lives of course, hahaha

The planned side died but the tree grew well last season. Nebari looks like a crab 🦀, I nicked it a little and applied some clonex. I'll take some cuttings this season to have for grafts at the next repot. A couple of buds are showing on the lower bare trunk. Maybe the cuttings can double for root grafts and branches if needed??

In my experience, Nishiki gawa roots very easily from cutting so you should have no problem getting stock for root grafts

Found an awesome Kuro Hime landscape maple today. Looks like a bonsai before any work!

Got this big guy potted up today, roots were better than expected, long way to go though. Really looking forward to seeing this one on the benches!

Almost finished setting up a more permanent propagation tent. Mostly repurposed materials.
