How long do you wait for the ground layer or air layer to grow roots ?
Different varieties take different amounts of time, the quick ones take about 5 or 6 weeks. I wrap my in clear plastic so I can see roots without having to guess or unwrap them. Look in the right of this picture, I probably left that one another week or so. The biggest issue after you have so many roots is it'll take all the water from the moss, if you let it go completely dry your roots will die. Ground layers I let go all season and check them in the spring repotting window. How long do you wait for the ground layer or air layer to grow roots ?
Yes, I'll set a layer in April then separate in June. I even wash the roots and spread them out on the freshly separated layer, I've read many advise against this. I've only tried a couple of ground layers, I probably leave them since I can't see the roots and want to ensure they have plenty of time to do their thing. Ground layers also throw roots into the pot or ground so they are easier to keep watered after they root.So you can do the air layer + cutting + "repot" in the same season?
For the ground layer you wait a full season for any specific reason ?
And Sharp's pygmy, I can see what appears to be good radial roots on this one so hopefully good to go as well. Also just wanting to document some fall color

I've only attempted thread grafts in late winter but I've seen Japanese YouTube videos where they defoliate and thread graft in late spring.I really enjoy seeing your work/trees.
Do you also do grafts "out of season"? I mean, after the buds have grown or after cutting leaves so the branch can pass in the hole? Asking because I might have missed my window to do so
Taking the next step for this mountain maple.Cut the chop site down to a more appropriate angle on this one today. I'm hoping by the time this cut heals this tree is looking more like a tree!

No repot for this one this year, so I'll be looking forward to seeing the roots next season. Internodes are reasonably manageable so I'll probably move it to a ceramic. Chops almost completely healed.Reasonably hard prune on this one today. That second trunk will likely go after the wounds have healed. Repot next yearView attachment 433468View attachment 433469
Sharp's Pygmy looking healthy, enjoying the afternoon sun bath.Last "big" landscape maple ground layer separation for this year. Purchased in November 2021, layer set March 2022, separated today. I had guy wired some of the branches out last winter. When I set the layer I cut a nursery can to fit around it and keep the roots going out. Looks good, buds are moving!
