Hacks Maples

First repot on this big guy. Had to take off some larger roots, unfortunately one right in the front, it was just too high up. This one is shaping up quickly.

I love this tree, and the mikawa yatsubusa. where do you source your AP cultivars? Here in Seattle, they're everywhere at nurseries but grown tall and skinny on trellises.

I'm curious as to what motivated you to repot this tree after only a year. was there a particular weakness you had observed?
Healthy tridents grow so strongly they can be repotted each season, I was just wanting to make certain to keep the roots on track.

I got these larger tridents from a local bonsai grower, field grown. The mikawa and most others came from a standard nursery, I was surprised to find that one myself!

Layer separated today, twas a big un!

This tree got attacked by deer and pushed over. Not sure what the roots may look like after pushing it back up last year. Moving towards an informal broom.

Stuck 20 A.P and 30 A.P. Katsura hardwood cuttings today. Quick dip in clonex, and straight to outside grow bed. Not expecting great results but we'll see.

That container looks a little oversized for the tree, so it is serving as a developmental container while also being a good looking ceramic.

I also like Mica pots for this role.

I agree, at least it's a little deeper than currently needed. I certainly hope the width looks more appropriate before the next repot 😆 🤣

Repotted this layer that had grown into the ground. Surprisingly I had to cut back way further than I thought I would've. Hopefully set up for future success.
