General comments

Well since Ill be awake I guess I could put them in at 12:01 on January 1st. Supposed to be in the upper 70's to the low 80's all week.

so I guess the 2 days we had in the low 70's was our winter.:p

February 19th is marked on my caledar to start the cold strat process. Not going to rush things...

I'm watching, not participating, guys. Ordered some Mikawa JBP seeds from bonsaiPlaza, will be delivered soon. But looking at the only and four year old seedling, considering my balcony conditions, half day sun, out of a species prefered climate range I will try to learn, improve and do my best. If some significant results are achieved I'll post them on my JBP thread. Thanks.

Is the general consensus that JPB doesn't have to be cold stratified, but that germination percentages are usually higher w/ cold strat?

I'm not in a position to answer that question correctly but on every seed selling site I've been they're advising on doing the cold strat process so who am I to question them

Tropics here - J.B.pine seeds being sown since 1987 or so.
Seeds are soaked over night and then sown.
Average - 30 seeds planted - 25 or so germinating.

Wondered if seeds are already from cold storage before being
packaged for sale ?

Merry Christmas,
Anthony

That's my understanding.

For folks who have the climate/set up to start seedlings in January it probably doesn't make sense.

For those of us who couldn't put seeds out until closer to April, the time spent stratifying seems worth it, to end up with more viable seedlings to choose from.

It's a solid 40 degrees cooler than 3 months ago! Last year with all the rain we got there were more than a few days I didn't take my sweater off at work. It hasn't rained yet so we'll see...

Looking forward to learning so I just ordered seed from a facebook sales site.
Been in every other contest here since joining so why not? Hope to be still around in 6 yrs LOL

Soaked my seeds overnight, placed them in some soil just now. Fairly equal parts perlite/peat/pine bark with a little sand on top. Set them on a heating mat. Will update if they sprout...IMG_20180102_202951.jpg

seems to me that a contest like this would be a great learning experience for someone like me who is a total noob to bonsai. since i live Saskatchewan, Canada how would one winter a jbp? i have an unheated attic that keeps a fairly constant temp during the winter, i haven't done any real temp comparisons but it stays quite a bit warmer than the outside temp during winter. would something like this work for wintering jbp or any other bonsai for that matter?
Morb, I suggest you research the chill requirements for JBP. That will tell you the temperature range in which you'd do best to overwinter them. I'm sure you'll have to do it inside; your attic may work, depending on how cold it gets.

thanks Treebeard55. the temp in my attic this winter has been in -1 to +3 celsius this winter so from what i have found on the internet i should be ok, although we haven't had any real cold days yet unless you count wind chill then we had a few -44-45 days but it's not that cold inside.

I've got a couple of sprouts as of yesterday, moved the container near an LED grow light, covered with a white kitchen trash bag temporary for moisture control, still on the heat mat.

I haven't seen anyone else post they've planted, am I the sole non-stratified control group, lol

Anyone have any quality seeds I could buy?? I don’t want to waste 15 years growing JBP that don’t have quality bark characteristics as suggested per Bonsai tonight. Plus I can’t reach the minimum purchase order for a lot of the seed websites, and the others are sketchy lol
