Fair price for hinoki cypress starter plants?

Well... I have a few nurseries in mind, but you could always visit Brad @ Bonsai Learning Center and Tyler Sherrod in Hickory.... You would have to almost trip over them on your way to Kannapolis
For some reason I can’t seem to get ahold of Brad every time I’m up that way. I have a list of stuff I need to pick up from him. Can you please send me tyler sherrod’s contact info? I’d like to meet him one of these days.

I have been agonizing over my lack of a road trip for close to 3 years now. I would appreciate it very much if you North Carolinian s would give me a recommendation of nurseries to visit in your beautiful state. I will be a vendor at the Winter Silhouette show, but that's not until December.
I live here and am still discovering new people/ places all the time. A list of places would be helpful for quite a few folks 😉

Before you buy I suggest getting more info on the specific cultivars. Some might not be good choices for bonsai. For example do you want variegated or curly foliage? A lot of the stuff sold for rock gardens etc. are chosen more for how attractive they will be to a backyard gardener and not for bonsai. C. obtusa nana (gracilis) are the most common grown for bonsai due to having the best dwarf characteristics. I have a C. obtusa kosteri I got from Bruce Appledorn that is similar to the native hinoki and after working on it a while I like the growth habit a lot. I can chop the roots down and it will come back with tons of new foilage. And after repeated pruning the foliage resembles nana.

One place I would highly recommend to check out is Get Rooted plant nursery in Chapel Hill, NC. They specialize in landscape maples, but they have a ton of other interesting plants as well, and their prices are incredible. Ive bought ginkgos, prunus mume, a 3ft tall katsura maple, and orange leaf Palmatum seedlings from them.

Mateo, thanks for bringing up this info. I never heard of Dearness and I've lived in Charlotte (area) since 2010. I dont make it up to north Mecklenburg much but I'm only 25 minutes away from them. Let me know if you make it to Hickory and I would be happy to meet up and go with you. Also, I just emailed him for a quote for private lessons, we might be able to split the cost and do a lesson together, if you are interested.

Sounds like a good time to me! I definitely will let you know when I head to hickory.

Very good to know. I will be sure to check them out next time I’m that way. Thank you Adam!

So I went back today and bought a pair. I passed on the “nana” cultivar because it is the most seen hinoki in Bonsai. I ended up getting a fern spray gold because I love these when they are big in the landscape and this one had awesome nebari. I also got a gemstone because why not, I’m a fan of the weeping foliage.

The ones that say "Iseli Introduction" are cultivars created by Iseli. I've got a couple of unusual arborvitae from them... the cultivar is an attempt to create a plant that grows as strongly as an arborvita, but looks exactly like a Hinoki. I'm hoping it might backbud UNLIKE a Hinoki.

Also... Brad has moved. He has a better layout on more land up in west Statesville just south of the 40. He's got to be less than 20 miles from Tyler now.

I’m excited for these two, they are less common cultivars of hinoki and they are on their own roots. It’s hard to find starter plants of this quality in a local garden center. These should be very nice in about 10-15 years 😂 I can see where a look alike arborvitae can have its benefits!

Don't want to be argumentative but I am on my second Fern Spray Gold now as a landscape plant. I would suggest pruning it back now and often because these get really leggy. I had one get about 7 feet tall, ugly as sin, I tore it out. Have one now in about a 2 gallon pot. I have done nothing to it and it is getting really leggy.
I have seen other gold cham that look great, but this one has never looked good to me once past its cute little juvenile stage. The one I have now was in one of those little pots from Iseli like yours.

It sounds like regular pruning is going to be the key to this cultivar. Thank you for the scoop on this one.

17 to 20 is the price for these dwarf hinoki cypress in our area. The primo arborvitae is another of these iseli nursery plants with wonderful tiny foliage.

I did not see any of those there. I’m hoping this is something they have regularly and rotate species.

Another member who has not posted for awhile brought this plant up a couple years ago. I now have 10 of them, 5 in 2 qt pots and 5 in gallon pots. I don't have an immediate use for them so I am just keeping them healthy.

I have never found a hinoki cypress in person, so I just bought one in a 1 gallon nursery pot online from Home Depot for $40 including shipping. Would love it if I could find something like this for that price
