Extended season starting trees indoors

Just some fun stuff in the tents

Little diversions till’ I need the grow space.

The Zelkova are definately a fine idea…though the idea will have to wait till’ later in the season when I build the insulated modular structure outside…..need more room. They actually thicken somewhat quickly as you can see the braches swelling.

Also the Siberian Elm is going to have a nice flared base. Was an air-layer and is currently growing in a slab of Grodan Stonewool.I am letting escape leaders grow while trimming leaves for balanced maturing, vigor and thickening of lower to topmost branches.Hoping to let the base branch get quite thick to swell the bole of the tree.

Pretty damn impressive.
Yea,right.Thanks…….only about 3 mnths old from seed.1 mnth or so in co2.
I will probably run out of room and grow it outside the season should be pretty darn huge and then eventually bring it in back to the CO2 and start early season CO2 should be developing super quick.

Seedling cuttings and Zelkova air-layers.

I really enjoy the zelkova air-layers.All are in clump/multi-trunk form. The brix on these is starting to get incredible….and very healthy color.I may defoliate today and shape a little. They certainly have regained vigor since last defoliation. They seem to stop growing and just do a lot of settling at this stage.Very good time for them.Of course I had lights at a low motherplant strength too.

Potting tons of pines into the mini-blocks.Slow work, but worth it.I may consider more standard volcanic media and move onto net pots or something when I get this all outdoors this season……( at a new crop beginning that proves a faster method of potting up the fresh seedling cuttings) when I get the new outdoor fascility built.B07BC033-BEC0-460A-9D7F-E110CDCBE655.jpeg6BFAF300-0682-4E37-B7FE-ED9D1A86C7F8.jpeg575CEC92-DDF2-4650-BDD6-A14E0AB044EE.jpeg1955374F-0D8A-4347-B37F-8650836BBBAC.jpeg6A00CA57-9D66-425F-A3F5-1868D3707D5E.jpeg77DD2AF0-3EBF-4E91-8C5C-170B21E06D44.jpegBE5BD729-CD15-48FE-9D99-26E74B93FE2E.jpeg

Got my jbps I ordered from ya in a bigger pot this year. Looks like they were ready for some room! This is the start of their 3rd year.

Now thats impressive!
Is the trunk base over an inch?

Will be huge this season.
Yeah just about right at an inch! I’m hoping they like their new, larger pots and substrate. Also my first time repotting them and trimming the roots so hoping they recover well. I also tried to wire some movement in the trunk in one and was pretty stiff so hoping I didnt do too much damage. Wish me luck! If all goes well they will hopefully take off. They have been very vigorous so far!

@cmeg1 have you ever had problems with mold or mildew on the leaves?
Only japanese maples do that to me..Never on pines….I also wash leaves daily with a yucca powder diluted in water……a mild topical fungicide. If i doors a sure sign of needed air movement from a fan and also lower humidity between 40-60%.

Not to hijack the thread, but hoping for some help.

The growcubes I have stay wet. Did the cutting method, losing a lot of seedlings to the stem basically withering away inside of growcube. Are they supposed to stay wet at all times? I used the purple clonex, how long after cutting the stems does it take to strike new roots?

Here's my tray (it has a 7" dome) and a close up. JBP in foreground, loblolly back, couple of BCs in the middle.

a heat mat under my clone tray helped evaporate the water in my root riot plugs and jiffy plugs, and the stem rotting in my clones stopped. a slight drying back cycle helped with the root growth.

Thats from sitting in the water…….even a tiny bit will flood into the cube and also no evaporation or air at bottom of cube.
I always use a Grodan Smart Tray insert to elevate the cubes and then keep 1/2” of water at all times in the 10x20 tray with a dome over it.Also heat is very beneficial ……a thermostat heat mat…..like a super sprouter.
The smart tray insert is very important with this method to elevate the cubes from any bacteria or moisture in the hot water in the flat.
Check this link and try again……it will work!!!
