Colors of Fall

You guys and gals are making me jealous. No real signs that fall has made it down to Florida yet. Though we are starting to get some nighttime lows in the 50s. Thanks for all the excellent photos!

Snowing here today!! Trees tucked in, ready for winter...almost.

Mach, do you do anything special to get such great colors out of your JMs? Simply gorgeous red color!

Thanks Chris! No, not anything significantly different than anybody else here. The key is to maintain your leaves in perfect to near perfect condition all the way into autumn for best color. This, at least in my experience, can be a feat that makes flying pigs a much more plausible sighting by comparison.

It seems that no matter what I do, some maples still suffer leaf burn while others make it all the way to the finish line. I believe this has to do in part with the specific environmental conditions of a given year. Obviously things that are outside of our control that affect the trees in different ways from year to year. The other half is the one most us already know: Proper and timely watering, light, food, etc, etc.

This little 6 month zelkova is starting to peak.At this point they change fast in a matter of a day.Tomorrow should be better. Then a 15 month. The leaves got very tired looking on it after I applied a topical insecticide.Lesson learned when It comes to happy leaves for fall color on Zelkova.

This is a large blue leaved Hosta I've had in a pot for a few years. I got it for its beautiful giant blue hued leaves that unfurl in the mid spring.....but the fall color isn't too shabby either:D.

Here's a 7-inch Japanese maple, broom style. It turned to brilliant color overnight.

Not a bonsai...yet. This is A.p. 'Seiryu', an upright dissectum that is supposedly easy to propagate through cuttings. This one is supposed to be a 5 year old cutting...I'll be giving it a shot next spring. I included pictures from this past spring.

I am envious...almost no fall colors here :( ....but at least some of my plants are still growing. :D

It is the same for me, Dario, no fall colors, the leaves stay on until we get a cold snap, turn brown, and then fall off. Every now and then, I might get a yellow one or two leaves on and elm or maybe a red one on a crepe myrtle. Sigh...

Well, this little 6 month is peaked.I am calling it.looks a bit different than yesterday, the 2nd pic.Although the pic from yesterday looks nice too.

I thought I'd share a few photos from the National Arboretum from today's visit with my folks. Fantastic fall colors abound.
