Spring update. I carefully repotted into 100% kanuma, the roots had a little growth but I just wanted to get it into the kanuma. A little growth is happening and there's some buds. And yes, I let it bloom. The enjoyment I get from the flowers exceeds the extra growing time to me. A couple of branches died back, but there's already new shoots to replace them. Should be a good year. We can only hope.20210403_102619.jpg

Spring is here and your azalea could be blooming (depending on your location) or starting to leaf out with this season’s flush……it’s time for updates!

I would also like to add at this time we have 3 prizes to award. Many thanks to @Forsoothe! and @Deep Sea Diver for donating. I am also donating a prize as well.

If you are no longer interested in continuing in the Azalea Contest, please let me know so we can close your thread, thanks.

I was taking the wire off of my entry so I thought I'd give a early summer update. It seems to be happy and putting on growth. Since I just took the wire off I'm going to let it rest for a minute before I do a little pruning and rewiring. I think it's looking promising.

After taking the wire off a few weeks ago it's put on enough growth that I decided to get some back on to keep it going in the right direction. No cracked branches so it went well. I think it's coming along nicely. I should get nice blooms next spring.

Nice tree, very healthy too.

You might consider laying off bends from now until late fall.

cheers

It's filling in nicely! Curious to see the final shape of the design.

Ultimately that first branch needs to go. You have a very nice taper otherwise. Options down the road would be to graft a smaller branch or hope it back buds on the lower trunk. Could be shortened, but it is very thick. Well, there are several years left in the contest and Kurumes constantly push shoots.

I've got design plans that include that branch so it's definitely going nowhere.

Gotta love them Hino Crimsons! Brilliant color, small flowers.

Even better, they can take a licking and keep on ticking!

best
