To share a story:
I'm a TKD Master... no really, I have a cert from Korea stating as much. When I was finished competing I started coaching, teaching, and refereeing. I was reffing a national match under scrutiny by the meanest, most strict SOB I've met on the circuit; Chung. During one of our few potty breaks, he pulls me aside and starts the reaming of a lifetime of what I thought was nothing. I mean little stuff. How my thumb rested on my pointer finger, how my shoulders weren't even when starting a match, how my shoelaces weren't tucked into my sneakers! And I'm standing there, getting it good in front of thousands of spectators and competitors while trying not to pee myself.
After said reaming, the other officials from the same ring rush over to me before the next matches begin. They are DRIPPING with jealousy!
"What did he say?"
"How are you supposed to hold your thumb then?"
"We should tuck in our laces"
Most poignant: "I can't believe Master Chung gave you a 1 on 1 right here in the middle of the tournament!"
That's when I realized that I wasn't getting chewed out. It wasn't a slight at all. It was an honor. This highly regarded veteran gave enough a damn to teach me, on his terms, in his words, on my shortcomings. Wow. Thanks Chung!
Later, after the event, after drinks, he wraps his arm around me. I had to pee again instantly. He whispers, "I know your father, good man."
Last I saw of Chung as I didn't ref much following that event.
I hope the parallel is an easy one to draw
@RickMartin
Sometimes life lessons, bonsai lessons, or TKD reffing lessons don't come with a spoonful of sugar. You take it the hard way or lose out on an opportunity to grow. As artists, as people.
@Smoke, nice of you to donate your time to Mr. Martin here. Shame it wasn't better received. I'll be posting more in the near future. If you'd like to make me pee myself, I'd gladly take that beating.
Cheers,
B
