Azalea Picture Identification Thread

Sport of 'Suisen'.
This plant has not had a good last two years. So far, the flowers have been decent. Despite the weather and the petal blight.
Hopefully, it will have some really good growth soon. It really has to fill out again. Otherwise, I fear this plant may be slowly declining.
Not completely sure why. Could be some cold winters knocking out a branch. Or grubs eating away at the roots.
Or this cultivar just not being as strong in my climate. Or all 3. Also failed to create any cuttings.
If it keeps struggling, I think I will put it in a pot instead.
Strangely enough, sometimes an azalea that does bad in a pot -> put it in the garden.
And when it does bad in the garden -> put it in a pot.

I think it should be spelled 'Chinzan', right? I see Riverbend have 'Chinsan' on their website. But that's their misspelling?
My thoughts as well but when in doubt I go with the tag. If anything it’s a record of provenance. Also, I may have jumped the gun on the photos as the flowers were more open this morning.60C1ED07-1B82-4986-A9E7-F120166B5488.jpeg25429ED8-27B3-48AB-8BA8-1D999F8AD08E.jpeg

Yeah, I am also often tempted to post pictures of unopened flowers. It misrepresents the flower shape and can lead to misID if one is not careful.

I often see quite a few misspellings, while the name is pronounced the same the spelling is different.

Next year? I see plenty of pollen in that flower.
I didn't realize and don't know Kagamijishi, but it is a sport of Yata no Kagami (though Skinyo).
Flowers very small indeed.

I did think about just collecting and storing the pollen. I'm still deciding what to cross breed for next year. Most all of my flowers are done for the season, we had a lot of rain/storms this spring right during blooming.

Hmm yeah Kakuo would be done by now, right?
I bought another 3 rooted cuttings, 2 slowly died off and the last one is hanging on by a thread. I need to find a well established one.

I am considering crossing Hino maru, Kakuo, Seidai, Hino degiri, Miyama mangetsu, and Izumi.

I guess it all depends on how much pollen I collect to store as the flowers bloom at different times.

Yeah, plans never work out. Storing pollen also isn't convenient. I kinda tried it, half-hardheartedly. What turned out more practical is bringing the late bloomer indoors to make it wake up earlier.
Bummer about that Kakuo. To me it didn't seem like a weak variety, even though mine died also.
Izumi should be good. I wonder how similar it is to Aozora. I'd avoid Miyama Mangetsu and Hinodegiri because they likely give all solid coloured flowers. Unless that's your goal for that cross.

What can I say? Everyone should have one.

I stored 'Chojuho' pollen in the freezer and was able to pollinate last year. I just have to remember to pull it out from the freezer when the time is right to start pollinating.

Like I mentioned before White's told me he is giving up on 'Kobai'. I may give up on 'Kakuo' as well. I just need the pollen or at least a couple flowers to set seed pods.

My Kakuo’s just finished a couple weeks ago. We tend to be amongst the latest bloomers on this thread. So I mostly don’t post here as I’m trying not to duplicate. If so it inadverten.

Here’s a little gem. Flexible branches, easy to work, small in size.

Sakura Komachi. I believe this is a Sport of Kaguyahime, in the Nikko system

That's a nice one! If you ever root cuttings off that one let me know.

One of the days we’ll have to get a post winter inventory and I’ll know. I’m thinking at one time I took some cuttings of this and another cultivar for @Glaucus…

Just a detail. Satsukimania actually has the name of Hakubai wrong. The spelling is Shiraume. The other way to write 'White Plum'.
Helps when you look for it in the dictionary. Shiraume is actually pretty interesting in that there are almost no pictures of it anywhere. But it was used a ton in crosses.
Usually, to reduce flower size, it seems.
