About two months ago I decided to take the plunge into making pottery. I began with a one on one lesson since I have a specific focus, and then spent a lot of time playing with clay to get a feel for the craft. I’m beginning with hand building and slabs as the need for nice ovals and rectangles outweighs the need for more rounds. I just unloaded the first firing of my own builds and glazing (commercially available glazes). The last two pots I made before firing I decided to focus what I had learned so far in my first experimentations and see if I could make two pots of the same size and shape. They are the best of the firing and I feel like I am off to a nice start. They are both approximately 7.5” by 5.5. And I apparently forgot to take a picture of the back of the second pot. My photography skills are as well practiced as my pottery skills, so things should improve as we move along I hope...

These next ovals are larger at about 11” by 8” and were earlier builds. They both dried and fired with a bit of wonkiness in the walls, but I learned good lessons from them. The rectangle is about 10” by 7” and came out well for an early attempt. The challenge seems to be getting even straight walls as the clay dries and fires. And here’s a free form just for fun. Now it’s time to practice practice practice and hopefully I will have a lot more to share in the near future.

Really nice start. well focused. I like that you’re beginning with pots that have clean lines and a good presentation quality. It appears you’re taking the time to learn and create excellent bonsai pottery. Mighty fine!

Those came out good. When do we get to see the next batch?

Beautiful work, definitely has a craftsman feel to it that I like, the imperfections provide character. Are any for sale?

It’s going to be a minute. We moved from Portland OR to Charlotte NC a week before COVID shut the world down. We are now three weeks away from moving back to Bend OR 🤣 I’m focused on packing up the house and about 80 trees, so pottery will have to wait until we arrive out west again. I hope to be building stuff again by mid June and hopefully finding somewhere to fire out there before I find myself a kiln.

I’ll be keeping the best of the first batch for memory sake, but would gladly offer others at training pot prices, as they’re not up to snuff yet to put out otherwise.

Hopefully I’ll earn my way onto your site before too long : )
Just hit up whenever you're producing at a level you feel comfortable having them featured on the site!

I will take a look at whatever you have for sale, before or after the move. Good luck

Time for an update as Ive finally gotten settled enough to complete my second kiln load. There has been lots of life and too much death since moving back to the northwest, but finally getting settled in enough to devote more time to craft. Tomorrow I will work on my photos setup, but I wanted to share these as I’m super pleased with progress so far. The next round is looking much better still. Everything is slab built and hand shaped. I can provide specific sizes but most are in the 9x7”-10x8” range.
