About two months ago I decided to take the plunge into making pottery. I began with a one on one lesson since I have a specific focus, and then spent a lot of time playing with clay to get a feel for the craft. I’m beginning with hand building and slabs as the need for nice ovals and rectangles outweighs the need for more rounds. I just unloaded the first firing of my own builds and glazing (commercially available glazes). The last two pots I made before firing I decided to focus what I had learned so far in my first experimentations and see if I could make two pots of the same size and shape. They are the best of the firing and I feel like I am off to a nice start. They are both approximately 7.5” by 5.5. And I apparently forgot to take a picture of the back of the second pot. My photography skills are as well practiced as my pottery skills, so things should improve as we move along I hope...
These next ovals are larger at about 11” by 8” and were earlier builds. They both dried and fired with a bit of wonkiness in the walls, but I learned good lessons from them. The rectangle is about 10” by 7” and came out well for an early attempt. The challenge seems to be getting even straight walls as the clay dries and fires. And here’s a free form just for fun. Now it’s time to practice practice practice and hopefully I will have a lot more to share in the near future.
