And so it begins again..

It also means that when we go into the dark period of the year, we have to grit our teeth against these southerners having spring and summer. Not sure it is too much to bear!
Just stop the whining , get your belongings and tropicals, and move down here for once and for all!
PS- Explain to your other half that bringing horses to Brazil is kind of difficult. But we have some interesting ones here.

Do you repot as soon as you see swelling?
I repot as soon as I see any movement...a bud swell or a slight colour change on a bud. I have repotted in mid winter(in my early years), but lately I figure the pathogens might have an opportunity then...when the sap flows, the tree is ready for it.

how long have you found it to take for the trunks on your Ports to fuse?
Mate I used the wrong word when I said fuse. I tried correct later, but ran out of time. The trunks don't fuse, they entangle by the roots. They tangle properly too....I couldn't move them, even when I removed from the pot to cut the roots. I'm keeping an eye on the nebari to see if they'll fuse or just grow overlapped.

this chap looks like he knows a thing or two about the species
Yeah i've seen him around Bobby...i've even tried listening to him...but this one I will... 🤪 Thanks mate.

Hm.. Nah, too many challenges. My other half and me looked into moving to Rio a few years back, and decided against it.

Ah yes this is what I've encountered so far too. The Bark seems too fragile to tolerate a tight wrap but maybe with raffia? Possibly worth a future experiment. Cheers

For succulents to merge one normally makes a flat cut on the section to merge, and then push them together, fixating them till they grow together.

Thanks for that mate...never thought of that. I'll do it with those two when their nebaris reach.

Well typical me..I changed things again. I'll record it here because next year i'll probably forgotten what I did.
One last one before the moon starts filling up...best time work roots is when the sap energy is down there. It's actually to late already...but it is what it is.
I decided to put the big Trident (that I repotted earlier) on a board. That meant I had to take it out and start over. I used another container. Drilled some bigger holes so the roots can grow bigger before the smaller holes start choking them.
I partly filled the container with dirt to the right height and placed the board and tree down onto it. The board completely fills the container to the roots can only grow out of it, into the grow bed.

Filled it with bonsai soil

And put it in the ground

And then mulched it over

Looking very much forward to this one growing out.

Hmmm... I wonder if it makes sense for there to be a “Southern Hemisphere” forum for you guys to use to converse since your seasons are opposite of ours. Not that I’m trying to discourage conversation, just organize it a bit?
I don’t think it causes too much confusion and offers fresh insight during our off season that can be applied when ours comes around. Perhaps a hemisphere tag might help? But as a mobile reader in FL I look at locations anytime the timing seems off because the person maybe further north or in a different environment. I love the location tags because it helps me learn better how different environments have different timing. For example I’d love if someone in a drier area (@AZbonsai and others?) put some thought into how their rainy season effects their potting/collecting efforts vs dry season. Is spring a dry season for them? Are their prior humidity effects on successful collecting/repotting? Not counting what we apply I mean, but a tree that’s already been exposed to rain/watering prior to work. We already know @sorce sees and firmly believes in lunar effects but what others are there? Even in the correct season is post rain/watering work more successful? If there’s enough interest should I start a thread lol? Didn’t mean to go off topic so far.

TLDR the location and timing is enough for me to keep hemispheres straight.

Not even all the way to the other side makes a difference! Lol. Just get somewhere that doesn’t snow in feet and you’ll be much happier! Lmao

Those terracotta trainers from Italy are nice. I’m about to head there with a car. Do you have the name of them?

Nah mate I don't have any name. I just get them at the local nursery. They are definitely mass produced so i'm sure you'll find them there in Italy. This is the smallest one.
