Here, as a debut on Bonsai Nut, comes the story of an elm.

First of all I have to declare, that simply everything I want to express with bonsai is connected to Walter Pall.
His philosophy of designing trees is my way, regardless wether I worked that out so far or not.
And please forgive me everybody, for my lousy english writing ! ...
This picture shows how it begun in 1997:

As a matter of fact I was the opinion, that this elm would be good raw material.
Nowadays I think, it was just a rookies mistake to collect such an ugly slinge :-) ...
Beginners often do not look at the nebari and tachiagari, but they think the crown of the tree is very attractive and already close to a bonsai-appeal. I also was this strong conviction in 1996.
In 2006 my bonsai-fellows and me decided to cut off the right subtrunk.
After this first basic styling, I utterly spoiled the design of the tree.
Flat leaf-pads on a deciduous tree is in direct contradiction to the natural habitus of such trees.
Sorry, I did not know it better that days, just another bonsai-crime ...

The development within 4 years.

Improvement of the design will be made in early spring.
To much twigs, too roundish shape and so on ...
Cheers, so long folks

Dear sorce,
basically I think peeed water is disgusting.
But I think there is a hidden message behind your comment.
I do not know wether I got you really right,
but I understand that as a very special welcom ...
By the way, ' had not been to Il so far,
maybe that is my deficit to understanding...

I am out for now ...
Sorry, just giving @sorce trouble about Illimois.
I have a cork bark that is not a great start, but I won't throw it out either.image.jpegimage.jpeg I like the first 6" and hope it looks similar to yours some day.
Don't be annoyed by the joking.

I like it. Started out kind of plain but your work has paid off.
Becoming a really pretty tree. And in a relatively short time.

Nice transformation! I think you have a great tree developing here... I agree with your assessment it is a bit "too round" and could use a little refinement.- obviously you know what you are doing... Thanks for posting, and please share more of your trees!

Sorry Arnold.....

Been day drinking.

The elm is nice!

Wow, thank you for posting, good progressions are hard to find and I love seeing them. It looks like the styling is starting to look much more natural in the last few pictures, great work.
