I'm super awful at wiring, I read a new book and I think I've improved a bit. Decided to try my Ficus concinna in the literati style.

It's got a long way to go obviously. But I'm excited to try my hand at this style. The bonsai book I just got had some beautiful examples of literati and I had never really appreciated it before this!

How'd I do on wiring? Any advice?

Heh. You should have seen my first attempts. I appreciate it! I'm hopefully going to a local club meeting on Monday. I'm bringing a notebook to write tips.

One thick wire is like 4x (or was it 8?) stronger than the next smaller size. Use the thickest wire that you have that's necessary to bend the tree before doubling up on strands. Ficus are flexible enough, given the right wire & technique, that you ought to be able to get a lot more bends in that tree.

The etsy/craftsy link by colin lewis provided above is a really good resource. Don't skimp on the length of the wire, and remember that effective wiring is all about anchoring wire.

Here's a good visual on wiring as well.

Practice on sticks or branches you have pruned off a tree. Or a mock up.

This is actually a really good lesson. Even clearer explained than how Ryan Neil would do it.

Edit, oh it was already posted. Yeah, this is the golden standard. There is a very longform video on YT about how to wire satsuki, that is also pretty good. But it is not highly educational.

Will do. I'll continue to mess with it. I do have a question, why is placing the wire clockwise or counterclockwise a thing? I didn't really understand why you use one for bending up and the other for bending down?

Hey, a second recommendation is never a bad thing!

If you have a Y, one side will be CW, the other will need to be CCW to hold it securely (going around the outside of the fork). Otherwise, you have to wire thru the middle of the crotch and that doesn't anchor as well. When Boon sees that he says "Yin Yang. Do it again." (The wire going from one side, into the crotch and onto the other side looks vaguely like the yinyang symbol if you squint and are kind of imaginative.)

As for one direction for bending down, neither direction is better than the other. Where the wire is in relation to the bend is what's important.

That makes so much sense. I was wondering what I was missing.

So if I understand it, it doesn't matter if you have CW or CCW going up or down, it's about where it is in relation to the branches. If one's clockwise the other is counter clockwise. And you can bend either up or down.
