Compared to a gun forum, this place feels like a Dale Carnage sleepover, LOL!

On a serious note, my rudimentary questions get answered pretty regularly. I typically will search the forum before i ask, but the truth is that I very often don't know what I don't know, and don't know how to search for it. I'm not easily offended, either.
Remember guns dont kill people....Americans with guns kill people.....
Plus its bear arms as in the arms of a bear....not the right to carry guns lol...
Also buying guns wastes bonsai money

Wow, I drank HARD for 10 years, from 20 to 30 y/o (quit daily drinking in 2015, but still fall of the wagon occasionally) in the form of getting wasted on mostly cheap beer every night and was a raging alcoholic. I drank on average 7-12 beers per night (on the low end early and on the higher end later). I don't know that I will ever stop missing it. I wouldn't say my life has really improved since, but my health has.

Sorry to be a buzz kill everybody.

Good on ya my friend! Everyone should strive for what helps them. Change is hard. Stay the course.

I am declaring war on black plastic

I would like to join you.

Please help me keep a conscious effort.

Why is that one hour that will help so much so hard to commit to?

but the truth is that I very often don't know what I don't know, and don't know how to search for it.

If Smoke (everyone) understood this, Bonsai would be so much better!

Yeah, joking aside, not having a thin skin is one thing but flat out being a dick to n00bs trying to learn doesn't help anyone. I still don't think that's what was going on but a valid observation, Big S.

In response to white plastic: UV goes after white and clear plastic like an ant on candy. I don't have the scientific data to prove that just,-- plain old experience in the experiments to get here. As to being dickish to noobs??? That depends on how the process is described, and how it is applied to garner this title. The truth is; nothing is more dickish than nature which will kick your ass regardless of what you think should be, how you think it should be, and whether or not you or anyone else goes off and pouts in a corner about what you were just told. Nature does not give a fecal donation what you think and how you whine or who you whine to, nature is going to do what nature wants according to its own programing and unless you learn this stuff you will lose every time. So if some meanie of a bonsai follower tells you something you don't like just remember they may not be trying to be mean--- just honest.

love Smoke....
Not saying he is a dick.

But I keenly observe the effects of positive and negative coaching.

(Baseball)
Time and time again I get signs that these coaches think a child knows something, simply because THEY know it themselves....not because it is something they properly instructed and practiced with the child.
Sometimes they even Say things like, "I wish I was on the field", which is proof, they think their child knows all they know, as their image of their child on the field is THEM and not their child.
They've "projected" themselves onto the field and when they yell at their child, it is truly them yelling at themselves, for something they knew they should have done.
I don't do this.
A proper method...

Coach and support prior. Allow. View and note individual mistakes. Speak of corrections later.
(Volleyball)
Same kid just started Volleyball, my mom coached and played for years and I was there, I played and Coached, Reffed and kept score.

So I figured my kid would be a natural...just like baseball! (Me projecting...noted!)

He wasn't! Sat most of the first game they got crushed in and he looked like a fish out of water!

So I applied my method of just cheering loudly, with bits of appropriately timed encouragement. (Since yelling real time instructions is proven useless)

And talked with him briefly after the game.

"Haha! I thought you would have played better than that! You guys gotta get your first bumps to the setter higher, you're wearing them out too fast. Those guys were good! You see how they were talking? You know how in baseball you are like a block away from another guy and you have to call it? The difficulty built in to the game of Volleyball is that you are ALL so close, able to cover the same area, it's even more important to talk, or you collide, or watch!"

Quiet Boy, Lead and Don't lead. Like me!

Can't say he got to talking much....

But he hasn't sat another second since that talk, and I believe they haven't lost again, except for HIS school pants at an away game! Lol!

Anyway....back to Baseball...

For 6 years I've been lured into trusting my child's future with these "coaches".
With their Grandiose Plans of A Killer team!

We finally have a Solid team, but most of the out of state and other early games have been played without their regular coaches.

And the teams that continue to beat us, are the same ones that ALWAYS HAVE....

The ones where you here simple, appropriately timed messages of encouragemt from the coaches....
"Put your hips into it"
"get a rip kid!"
"Step step"
"Look alive"
"Where's the play?"
"Drive it"

And in every instance the losing side does the ole, yell as it happens and bitch later.

"Two two, aawww...what are you doing?"
"Come on, you could have hit that"
"Would you stop watching the ball!?"
"What were you thinking?"

Makes me wanna go punch a motherfucker in the mouth and tell em about what the kid is thinking ...
He's Fucking sad and that don't help him!

Makes it even more shitty to do it here....
Since 1....this is not really in real time.
2. In real Bonsai, time? We have all the time in the world to properly coach.
3. Any piece if shit stick previously diced, killed, or EVEN bought dead, is still an opportunity to COACH.

SO LONG AS THE TEACHER HASN'T PREVIOUSLY PROJECTED HIS KNOWLEDGE INTO HIS STUDENT AND QUESTIONS WHY THEY DON'T GET IT!

That shit is impossible and makes you look like a moron!

Been following this thread for a while. Glad the OP isn't calling people out .

Most of the time when regulars here go postal on someone, it is usually a two-way street.

Beginners and newcomers here sometimes come with a lot of baggage--Some of it is the "I'm a visionary pioneer and love breaking the rules" attitude, or some truly bizarre take on bonsai. I've seen instances of both dozens of times over the years.

It isn't pleasant spending time responding to either demands that I provide information or being "proven wrong" because I'm "an old poop" or worse.

I am not mean, but I can turn mean when someone is being a dick or making extravagant claims about their "abilities" and superior vision of their (typically) pathetic gawd awful stick in a pot.

I am certainly not a bonsai master (and BTW, the titles in our profiles is NO indication of ability--it is a measure of the number of times we post), but I do want to help newcomers. Sometimes newcomers don't want to be helped. They want sometimes misinformed, sometimes lame-brained ideas to be validated or told their crummy work is AWESOME.

The vast majority of new people aren't like that and genuinely want to learn.

The small minority, however, can be borderline psychos with substance dependencies.

So, when you think one of the "regulars" here is being a dick about things, take a hard, HARD look at the other side of the table and see what's going on over there.

Hard to admit but, I've been a bit guilty of these things to some degree.

I just can't stop before getting drunk, that's my problem. Then I wake up the next day, and everybody is pissed at me.

Oooh, I know that feeling...........

Plus, when I read you talking about beer, I feel dry and have images of Guinness flashing in my mind - doc, is it serious? ;)

Everybody here has been a dick at one point or another.

Really?... :p

This is what is wrong with social media. It’s easy to be ugly to someone when you don’t do it face to face. I feel the same as you in that there are tons of help here but all of a sudden things turn for the worse. I was reading a post the other day, and it was very informative, but around the 3rd page the topic of soil came up and just like that the pissiness walked in the room. It took about 4 pages before the group got back on target.
Those type of conversations I don’t have room for in my life, it’s way too short.
I have used the ignore button numerous times. This members may have great information to relay, but the cost of receiving that information is just too high.

There will always be soil wars...I do feel climate has a lot to do with how some handle their substrate. I personally don't let anothers views on it be the be all. I use what works for me...and don't begrudge what another finds works for them. Life is to short...I rarely go into a substrate thread topic. But it helps early on...to grasp...soil wars happen. Doesn't define the member on the forum for me personally.

You know what really pisses me off? This thread is four pages long and I have not received a single notification in my messages?? What's wrong with this picturte???

In answer to the original query; Does ANYONE really like or appreciate the bitchiness on this site? Yes I do. I am likely to challenge someone who is mean and nasty without cause and behaves like that. If someone is being critical or accurate about what they say or in response to what was said? I have no problem with them. However You want to find a bonsai sight that is better than this one please post a link I would sincerely like to visit it. Look at the IBC. there is not much keeping that sight alive. Used to be the home of some of the most influencial talent in bonsai now they don't even have contributions from the self proclaimed great masters.
Vance this is what I believe the original poster was talking about. This is a great site even with all the snippiness. But we, me included, shouldn’t get defensive when someone has a differing opinion. A technique may work in your area and that person may have great success with it and that same technique may not work for someone else. There are so many nuances if you don’t follow one seemingly small innocuous step to the letter your results could be totally different. How about we all commit to debating the issue and not go on the attack. Just saying

Unless it's directed at you I don't see an issue here.

I'm still new at this and ALL basic questions bonsai related can be found with the search button. It just seems like a lot of newbs post up them basic questions without doing their own research.

Or ones can't read tone in text...I can say I don't feel that applies to everyone. Thin skin can take ones simplest comment and run wild with it. Those...folk are on my list. I have no patience for thin skinned dramma. Does that make me a d*ck? Possibly...
