Show your 2024 maple colors!

Your Ukigumo in awesome color! How often does it do it and is it in the ground in the back 40 under the shade of giant evergreen conifers
It's in the ground. I've had it there for 3 years now. It does vary, but I do get quite a bit of white each year.

Here's mid June 2022:

I love Ikandi in the spring. The leaves tend to curl inward on mine, like the other higasayama varieties. But yours aren't doing that. I wonder why. I'd prefer if mine didn't curl. I'll try to grab a photo of mine today.

Here's mine today. Colors are fantastic, but I'm not a big fan of the way the leaves curl.

While we're at it, here are a few more from today.

Finally put Sunny Sister (vine maple) in a sunny spot this year. It's much happier:

Shin Hikasa is... unique:

First year I've seen Squitty leaf out. Looks a lot like Shin Hikasa:

Still want to add Disco to the collection, but I'm 0 for 2 trying to buy it from Maplestone Ornamentals. Actually managed to get it into my cart this year, but it was gone before I could finish the transaction. Grrr. Lasted all of 20 seconds on their website when they posted on May 1.

I've been watching that one too! Maybe next year.

Your Noel looks great! Looks like it's doing its own roots too! Mine is quite small, so no layers yet.
Mine was a gallon 3 years ago. Airlayer was really small (about 1/2"), but I figured better to do it and have more time on the other side for growing. I haven't tried cuttings, but I bet they work easily as well. This spring I'm airlayering most of the rest of it since I know it works. Then grow more stock from what's left and I'll have two on their own roots.

Trident Miyasama looking glossy, but probably not happy about all his wounds

Small leafed Acer glabrum var. douglasii seedling with chartreuse leaves awakening for another growing season.

I believe that this species is very overlooked for bonsai. It is especially cold tolerant even in my Zone 3-4 environment and experienced zero dieback when it was planted in the ground this past winter with a single day reaching a low of -42° C ambient.

新出猩々 (Shindeshojo)

This is a small cutting I received in the mail last week and I am hoping that the muted colour it is displaying is on account of the maple beginning to leaf out in the dark box. Hopefully adequate lighting will allow the next sets of leaves to present the more intense red that they are famous for.

These are all new to me this year. IMG_20240506_092931.jpgIMG_20240506_092718.jpgIMG_20240506_092625.jpgIMG_20240506_092610.jpgIMG_20240506_092617.jpgIMG_20240506_092554.jpg
Went a little nuts on Home Depot's 3 gallon Japanese maples under $40 CAD each. Went to a bunch of different locations picking out the healthiest ones and then the one big 5 gallon Sango Kaku because it has a nice s curve at the base. This will be the year of the airlayer for me. So much new material to play with
