Zelkova project

I don't know when it was initially chopped. I got this from Plsnt City a couple years ago. I didn't have the carving bits until recently. The middle of the original chop was rotting, so I had to carve that out. It doesn't appear they had ever applied any cut paste or wound treatment.

Plsnt City got in about a half dozen of these, and I gave a workshop where we cut back the roots and did some cut backs on the branches. All have survived the root pruning. And are growing back out.

I'm not planning to try any root cuttings.

If you do that root pruning....it would be interesting to see the before and after of the roots before hiding them below the soil. What's underneath the soil is interesting.
I've done others from this same batch. What's under the soil is a mess! I'll be doing a "reverse trunk chop" underneath! I'll try to keep any radial root I see, and remove those going straight down.

Just curious, for which reason would you not repot it this year? I would think it's in high need of some rootwork?
Grtz

Nice trunk. Really like the initial work. Would root reproduction have been faster when leaving the top growth? Building a flat full of roots in a year and then chop off the branches with ultimate power? With zelkova i do not think it will matter that much. I'm looking forward for repotting pictures.

Dirk,

Zelkova are very vigorous growers. Yes, I should have done the root work last year. I meant to, but missed the window.

The time to do the heavy branch pruning is when they.'realized dormant. Which is now. So I did.

If I see strong budding, I'll do the root work. If it appears weak, I won't. And do it next year. I expect I'll be doing root work!

Today I repotted Zelkova serrata and Z. nire. What do you think, can they be propagated by root cuttings like ch. elms? I saved and planted them...

Probably. I've never done it. I have started zelkova from seed and cuttings.

Weeds, no wire, tucked into the bushes with a discarded garden hose nozzle....reeks of "Zelkova neglect"....:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

And I'm asking as a S.O.A.S.O.B.....;):D:D:Do_O

What' going on with this tree?

I was hoping to make a broom style of of it. And I hadn't picked a front. But, one of the larger branches did not bud out.

So, this project has not gone particularly well. The rot in the middle from the old chop extended far deeper into the trunk than I expected.

I've had them grow from root cuttings,by the way that's one nice trunk!
