Your Bonsai Goal

I'd like to be able to see a piece of stock, see the bonsai within and know how to get it there, without any doubts in my process. I'd like to create beautiful trees.

That took me 20 years. Have fun on the way.

My goal this year is to keep 10 of the 30 or so plants I have now and add no more then 10 for a total of 20 in the backyard. We moved and did a renovation so the only Bonsai Garden work that happened was a new fence and temp shelves. Our old place had 3 areas and it took a lot to thin it out but I think 20 or so "proper" specimens will display well and grow well in our little new space. Reality set in and honest I can pull off a sharp presentation including the oriental fountain and other deco collected in a smaller space AND have a lot less work. The only hauling I will have to do is with my Wives tropicals and that will be a plus as well.

Man it's good to see you back! I trust all is well.

Smoke, this is a fun read and thought provoking thread. My goals are simple and have become more developed over the past year.
1. Be focused
2. Trust my initial reaction
3. Continue my study with BVF
4. Stop thinking of myself as a beginner and realized I know more than I think I do
5. Critically evaluate each and every tree and be realistic on its place in limited space
6. Continue developing a shohin display for our local club
7. Continue to try helping our local club

1. Have a tree in the Bonsai collection at Lake Merritt after I'm gone.
2. Visit Japan and see Kokofu.
3. Show a tree at Artisan's Cup and Bill's National Exhibit.
4. Own a tree worthy of an expensive, antique Chinese pot.

I want to learn as much as I possibly can.

Not be so reluctant to join a club.

Start making my own pots in my own kiln?

Have trees that impress my relatives who make fun of my current sticks in pots...

Buy ONE nice tree.

Learn to wire better.

Improve grafting/layering skills.

Enjoy my new hobby that keeps my face out of my phone/tv!

For me, bonsai is more about the journey than the destination. My trees get better every year and that makes me happy but the time I spend with them is in many ways its own reward.

A number of years ago a member of the local club, Dean, was giving a public demonstration of wiring. A fellow in the audience said,

"Bah, I'd never have the patience for that."

Dean said, "Patience is what you need when you don't like what you are doing."

That about sums it up for me.

Wow, bonsai is all about patience!

Thank you! And yes all is well! The house renovation is very close to 100 percent downstairs but as with all projects they always cost more and take longer then expected. It has been fun though, just busy making sure I can have the Spring and Summer free this year.

Has been said several times but in different ways: To be better today than I was a week ago and to keep rolling in this direction. I want to see the improvement, after I do the work on a tree, and to visualize the work necessary to make improvement; even if the work done a while ago was not that long ago.

Pretty simple, have fun, keep 'em swingin' and see my enemies driven bef....oopps...wrong goal list!!!

My goal is to find and collect good material. I have collected deciduous trees from woods In my area but nothing special. One of my goals is to find and collect some really good material on my own and make it into something beautiful. Also,a goal of mine is to take a couple of junipers I have, that have amazing potential, to a workshop with someone like borjn or ryan neil. I justcant seem to get any further on them than I already have and I know they have the potential to be great trees, worth showing, in just 2-3years time with the right hands. I bought them for 5$ a piece last year! One of my main goals is to join a local club and just get more involved in general. I missed both shows this year in NC Due to financial and ti,ing reasons. I wanna hang out and meet other bonsai people... I'm tired of kind of being "alone" in it. Although my girlfriend is fully supportive of my hobby and I feel that I have learned and advanced so much on my own. There is only so much you can learn about bonsai, soley by yourself. Those are some of my main goals.
