Your Bonsai Goal

I'd also like to meet more people who do bonsai, and make friends with other local people outside of my club area (and inside as well). It would be wonderful to bridge the international border, but maybe a little unrealistic given my current level of involvement in the hobby and things like job/child/wife/money/time/distance/beer

truthfully, another thing that has been on my mind is to learn more from D. Fukumoto sooner rather than later...I'm working on a long term project from his nursery and I can't wait to see my finished project...his trees that are over there in hawaii made my eyes pop out. I didn't know the most common houseplant in America could look like like and will probably end up being my masterpiece bonsai if it looks anything like his. alas, I have run out of room in my apartment for any more tropicals...not enough light and my little baby is getting more curious about tipping things over...lol. and money too...not cheap to buy good quality material from him and ship it over, although it is good material

I've always wanted to go to Japan. Not just for bonsai but it would be the biggest reason.
The other reason being maybe to catch a glimpse of their other big export. Really big export.
GODZILLA!!!!!!!!

So, I have been at this for just a year and a half, and pretty much wasted last spring because I had very little material, got tons of cool material (non-masterpiece pre bonsai still in soil but with little root treatment and some reduction). Importing trees is illegal here.

Right now my goals are (now to 5 years):
1. Get trees into pots and make them mediocre-decent bonsai.
2. Start planning longer term projects (the lack of variety here makes me have to start some things from seed).
3. Learn how to wire.
4. Learn how to graft.

Medium Term 5-15 years:
1. Have really nice looking trees, hopefully over 10. (couple pines, deshojo, regular palmatum, palmatum forest, smoke style sumo trident, ror trident, a chuhin sized azalea, shohin sized azalea, shimpaku, wisteria, olive, couple elms)
2. No need for shows, because we basically have just a few but have them presented really nice at my house.
3. Get really good at transforming nursery azaleas into nice bonsais.

Long Term:
1. Hope my kids want to inherit my bonsais after I am gone.
2. Get at least one person to incoporate bonsai in his/her life.

Well, I'd like to live long enough to "finish" a couple more trees.

But mostly, I'd like to live long enough that I see that NO one ever again uses an apostrophe as a bit of punctuation for a plural nouns, as in:
own a good camera for better photo's
:(:eek::oops:

Keep focusing on the important thing's! :)

I became familiar with bonsai through my koi hobby and attending koi shows. Weirdly enough I've been to several bonsai shows yet never owned any bonsai. Couple years ago went to local bonsai club auction. Bought some stuff and put it away for two years. Just now getting into it.

I don't have any goals with bonsai. I just want to create. Whether they're appreciated by someone other than me is not important. Sure I'd like to give a little enjoyment to someone with them, but it's not a goal. For now I am content with learning and playing around. I'm finding my interest increase, and now I think about bonsai a lot- daydreaming, browsing internet, playing with my trees or hunting for potential trees.

So no goals, just cruisin along....

I'd like to be able to see a piece of stock, see the bonsai within and know how to get it there, without any doubts in my process. I'd like to create beautiful trees.

Goals for this year...
Gather 2-4 high quality trees this spring
Teach 2 different classes this year and try to get at least one more person in our area interested in Bonsai(1 person /year has been pretty reasonable).
Repot fewer trees, which means gather more pots to have better choices.
Get my tamaracks and spruce trees wired prior to repotting season.
Sell 10 trees at our club auction this spring
Prepare 5 high quality trees for the MN State Fair (I'd love to have "Best Tree in Show". Last year I had "Best Juniper in Show" which was in essence second place)

Future goals...
Have trees entered into National shows.
Attend Kokufu-ten sometime.
Develop more shohin trees for group display

Lastly,
Appreciate trees before I enter into any critique of them!!

This season I want to focus on:
  1. Keep learning.
  2. Get better stock.
  3. Work on trees as much as I can.
In the long term I would like to have some trees that are close to show quality.

In the long long term I would like to have one of the pines I've started from seed get to a show quality state.

How about never again seeing "your" used for "you're" ( but I'm pretty sure that "you're" will actually go the way of the adverb - the writing is on the wall, so to speak)

As for me I just wish to enjoy the serenity and vision of naturalness during my last years.

I'm all for proper grammar but this is a forum about bonsai. I get to typing and make a few mistakes along the way, it happens. I really appreciated the "edit" capability on 1.0 just for that reason only. If I have to check my spelling and grammar each time I post something it will make me less likely to contribute to the discussion. The focus should be on bonsai.
