Whats Going on in Smoke's Backyard?

Don't know, didn't grow it. Ed is a firm believer in sacrifice branches to gain thickness. He is a talented fellow when it comes to growing these things.

I just cut it off....
I'd say to be able to put it in that location.

Back on page 22 I had chopped the five trident clump I am working on.

Today I took a picture. Some had wondered why I chopped it so low? Well this is why. All this growth, massive growth is going right into the base of all five of those short stumps. Some of the stronger leaders are already up to pencil size and by fall this will be 10 feet tall again.

Update on Frokensteen. The five tridents I tied together are starting to fuse and in a couple more years it should be completely fused. I have added a cage around the base. I did not scar it but just the wet against the bark will cause roots to grow to improve the base.

This elm project is from my repots this winter. I had two large roots I removed from the large cork bark elm I potted this year. The roots looked pretty good so what the hell, pot um up.

Now they have sprouted so now they will get the screen cup treatment to give me a wild clump of trunks to play with.

Am I correct in assuming that you got a few odd looks from people passing by as you dug it out & wondered what you were up to? If only they could see what you've done with it!

Oh no...the shopping center was being demolished and a new one built. I had complete permission from the developer and the demo company in removing the plants.

Some accent plants that are looking pretty good as the spring has revived them.

There is one thing these four trees have in common. It is one mistake that lots of beginners make because they don't understand the rules about forms. Anyone see it?

Here's a hint. This tree does not have it!

Is it inverse taper? Or branch cuts?
Imperfection makes the tree more beautiful though. The branch cuts may throw off the scale size. That is the only flaw I can think of.

Nope, has to do with the form of the tree, its shape as in informal upright. What makes it so?

I must be too green still.
I think they are lovely.
