What did you do today? Show us Pic Required

I had a really awful week so I've been adding wire to a few of my trees here and there but mostly just standing around staring at my trees in existential crisis. It's still so warm out I feel like I can't do any of my normal fall stuff.

Still trying to fix this little ugly duckling scots pine. The S curve in it bothers me so much. This angle diminishes the S the most. The apex needs to be tightened up a bit more. My friend repotted it in the spring when I was recovering from surgery so it's been mostly left alone this year.

I've spent the day watching the flames of many, many burning houses, which I can see from inside my own house. It's very depressing to see so many lives ruined. All those bright spots are burning houses.🙏

We'll be sleeping in shifts tonight so we don't get surprised by a change of wind direction or a new fire.

🙏 that you have no damage and your family is safe. I know. I owe a picture.

Took a gamble today and collected this Jeffery with a slight mistletoe infection, the last tree I brought home with mistletoe killed like 4 of my trees, this time I pruned off all the branches that were infected and will keep him away from my other trees, feel better Jeffery

Thank you, Carol! We have been lucky so far (thank you God). Since I've lived here, fires have been very close, but the wind was in our favor and blew the fires away from us or around us, this time included.

completed my new winter bunker, a cold frame for my junipers and pines. used a sheet of 6mm vinyl that's used in house siding for the too as it will weather better than plywood and cedar mulch to line the bottom and more for around the pots. just propped open with scraps to show it off, but light enough to easily remove on warm days. thanks @Paradox

Walking a lake bed. Looking for the rock/stone I spotted the other day while walking my furbabies. When I saw it, I thought, nice. It was not close to where I parked, but shouldered it out. 20/25 pounds maybe. And a 4 foot section of Driftwood I picked the other day.
Looking for the right plant for both pieces.

I had started work on this guy back in September at a local bonsai supplier’s 10 year anniversary event. Was only able to place rebar and 4gauge wire during the 2 hours I had as I spent more time chatting with attendees 😂

Got her back home and finished everything up and photographed it last week. Just finished editing everything today.

Yea the first time I used my cold frame, I used plywood and despite my best efforts to paint them and seal the end grains, after 2-3 years they were getting heavy with water and delaminating. I ended up switching to PVC sheets that are also used along the base of the sides of houses. So far they seem to be holding up well.

I used a scrap piece of aluminum wire to fish some electrical wires to another side of the stud while relocating and installing a new light switch. So it was semi-bonsai related.

Improvise, adapt, overcome.

In other news. I started to look into building a retaining wall more seriously so I can properly budget for the project. I still need to inventory what supplies I have for starting seeds and buy what I need.

I did some clean up work on some trees of mine to set them up for next spring.

I added some wire to my black hill spruce. Looking back, it looks like I certainly took a lot off. This tree was mostly the start of me attempting to no linger be afraid of hard cut backs to build hood branches. We'll see where the next year takes this.

Below is a Boyd's willow. I removed random twig dieback and also gave it a moderate pruning to hopefully get some earlier trunk divisions. I also left some areas untouched as there was some pretty swollen buds present that I think are flower buds. As I know some people trialing this plant haven't gotten it to flower, I figured if it was a flower bud I could take a picture of it in the spring time.

As a bonus, here Is a picture I took last week of a friend I discovered while playing with some of my saplings. I decided to procrastinate on the task and practice my macro photography skills on a moving creature. This is my favorite of the set as you can see their eyes and it has a little hat.
