slowly wiring this black pine I chose a new front and going to do a father / son tension based design with the smaller echoing the design of the larger. still trying to figure out what branches stay but going to wire out the entire thing, place and then have a think.

Threw away a live plant for the first time. Had what I now think were root mealybugs (lavender star).

After about 10 applications of a systemic, and a bare root + wash in the middle, they just wouldn't go away. Didn't want to bring it in this fall with the rest of the tropicals.

Obviously after I threw it in the trash I found more possible treatments (like soaking the roots in 115° water for a couple hours) - but it's too late in the season for more experiments.

Placed moss on this Juniper I reduced and potted. Same method of placing, sprinkling and watering worked well with other small junipers I worked in the Spring.

Along my fence all my dwarf holly bushes were dying due to lack of rain so I dug them up and decided to move my collection of pre-bonsai material over to the side of the yard where they'll get several hours of mid-day shade. So far I've lost two trees this season (my fault) but I'm hoping this new location introduces less stress.

Interesting thing I found out about these dwarf holly bushes. Either I did this at the perfect time of year or in general they back bud and generate new growth like nothing I've ever seen. The first picture is the best of what I dug out and trimmed back. I'll keep reducing the length of the branches as it continues to back bud over the next several years...

Mealy bugs are hard to get rid of, I've been fighting them on my office orchids. I wouldn't have brought it in with the other tropicals either.

We had a week of unseasonably warm weather (30+ C) so I decide to chop some limbs off a large jade ‘forest’ I found at a garage sale this summer. Today and tonight I potted the cuttings as well as quickly repotted a few rehabilitated succulents. The variegated afra was pretty much dead when I found it, the crassula was a little better off but much healthier up top now. Both of them have very weak roots hence new soil and some upcoming weeks under heat and light before that equipment gets used for… better trees.

The little guy at the end will be a Christmas present for my sister.

Did some rewiring of a wee little BAC I picked up at the AABS show last weekend. It arrived to me with some partial wiring:

It had begun to bite, so I removed it (there is a wound at the graft site but it looks to have been healing nicely for a while now):

Rewired - didn't do much to the lower branch since it was already nicely curvy, but tried to get the upper branch to come along for the ride.

Beautiful! What is a BAC?
