Got some Air-Layers out of the way…… making smaller trees from my Avocado so I can gift one and shorten the useful fruiting part of the tree on mine (inexperienced grafter grafted very high on stock)

Was going to remove some branches off my Emmett’s Pumpkin Full Moon Maple and Shin Deshojo, so figured why not….

Rebagged the collected BC I bought from @Cajunrider . Finished pics tomorrow, I had to leave and it was too dark when I got back. I was able to completely bareroot the tree, there was still plenty of mud in the middle of the tree between the roots and under the trunk. I cleaned the top until I reached a decent location where I was comfortable sawing the bottom with my sawzall. This made the removal of the organic soil a lot easier.

Still plenty of feeder roots near the trunk, a benefit of the root pouch. I combed all the roots straight out, and cut off all crossing roots and roots growing either straight down or up. There are a lot of finer roots between the thick roots creating the flare and also growing from the bottom of them. Hopefully, this will help the tree buttress more during this year.

With the amount of roots that grew this year, I am confident that this will be an annual endeavor until the tree goes into a pot with akadama. The soil I have the tree on surrounding the organic ball was pumice and monto clay. Since it doesn't break down and since the tree will be in water all year long I slightly rinsed it and reused it.

After removing the bag and starting to clean up the top area.

After sawing the bottom and hosing off most of the mud/organic soil off.

Stained my deck in preparation for a new 12x16 hard top gazeebo. Used Behr Semi-Transparent penetrating oil. I cleaned the deck this past week with some spot power washer treatment. Tomorrow ill be finishing the stairs and some touchups by brush. Need to get the grass trimmer going on the sides before staining. Deck itself is 16x20.

Also next planned wacky mechanical component composition: Euonomys Elatus (Burning Bush) in a burner control module.

Repotted my starter juniper from its original pot into something larger that is more suitable for a cascade. Much different feel in a much more masculine pot.

You know it’s a beautiful day out when you break out the inflatable pool. I did WAAY too many of my repots in the bitter, wet cold.

Time to update the profile pic?

Today, I took a long walk in the park and admired the trees and the city feeling so vibrant. I also went to study group and root grafted one of my maples, but forgot to take pics.

This happens every time we get a sunny weekend in the spring that is going to be almost 70. The kids played and froze.

Also today, I appreciated my magnolia in full bloom.

I inspected the garden today. Looking over all the the recent reports and seeing the various plants waking up. I'm loving this odd bend on this Alder that volunteered itself 2 years ago.

One of my flats that I left out for winter has sprouted some seeds. Korean Fir, Japanese flowering quience, and serviceberry. I also placed two of my seedling flats outside to offically begin their first growing season.

I did these yesterday. I potted up my 1 year saplings for Korean horn beam (6ea) and various Acer species (11ea). 2ea Flowering cherries also got put into small pond baskets. I really like the initial impression of these pots. Seems like a decent quality of plastic (I was expected more of a cheap injected style plastic), feet on the bottom to raise the pots, and a wonderful surprise of being able to nicely nest in a 1020 flat. Depending how these work out, I will probably use them for my very young saplings before moving them to pond baskets or something similar.

hello all, my name is Julien thank you for this vast trove of living knowledge you have created and for your beautiful trees.

these are from the past week mostly, today I potted up a trident from cedar rose nursery, still have a bit of chopping and carving to do but I’m really excited for the future of this very shapely trunk. the day before I potted up a black pine by Peter Tea—I can in no way claim credit for any part of this beautiful creature but one of my favorite artists is Andrea Mantegna, who obsessively studied the works of Ancient Greek and Roman masters and also nearly bankrupted himself collecting those same antiquities he loved to study; I am also a professional artist and I like to imagine myself doing something similar with Bonsai, and this tree will be like a living relic or icon for me which I will nurture, pray to, and learn from. Forgive the dramatic pics, I was working on it carefully until sun down and had to use a lantern to document how it turned out.

I have been obsessively poking around small trees for about eight months now and it is the only thing that has ever held my attention the way painting or drawing does and it is also really nice to have something that I can work on, learn about, and learn from that is completely my own. It also makes me go outside which is a definite plus as my growth habit can tend towards reclusive night owl.

I’ve also included images of my Stewartia and my Redwood and a maple next to them also from @Cedar Rose that I potted into grow boxes and a terra cotta pot about two or three weeks ago. I was worried I cut way too much off the Stewartia but it seems to be growing nicely or starting to; the flared root base is mostly covered up in moss and soil as I want to encourage it to go forth and multiply as fruitfully as it can.

I’m also really proud of the Zelkova seedlings from bonsaify in the lower right hand corner next to the Stewartia—only because they seem to be very healthy with those fuzzy thick leaves like the close ups @cmeg1 shares. I have been following his nutrient and foliar spraying regimen. Eventually I want to make shohin brooms outta them.
