Today, a friend and I drove the two hours to our nearest bonsai nursery.......Underhill Bonsai, in Folsum, La. Evan has a large variety of bonsai in all stages of development. LOTS of bald cypress. I picked out one rather large shimpaku and a smaller one. Both were healthy and vigorous. The large one (pictured) has an approx. 2" base. This one had 3 almost equal sized trunks originating from the same place. While not my favorite arrangement, the tree was simply too gorgeous to pass up. It was $100------ the most I've ever spent on a tree, but worth every penny.

I'll add that Evan bought a bald cypress from me a while back, so I was kinda playing with house's money. :D

people are already repotting trees?! 🫠
I checked on my over-wintering plants and noticed buds pushing on my honeysuckle... this is going to be quite some spring huh? 50s and 60s for the forseeable forecast :/
I’m done! And about 2-3 weeks too late. Fingers crossed!

He has long been a hero of mine. When I was fairly new I naturally asked him for advice on repotting evergreen oaks. He was so gracious and kind. People that are at the apex of a field and are humble and gentle teachers are a rare and precious jewel. He’s one.

Actually off to a pretty good start! I can see the future of this one!
Thanks, it was all the tree! It’s definitely got some promise—the bark is killer, it flowers profusely, and I noticed only after taking these photos that the line of the trunk is really lovely. I feel really good about the steps I’ve made on this tree. Here’s it’s thread (though I plan to start my own soon).

I am one of those people haha. I am also in a very temperate climate. It is still fairly cool out and trees are waking up. I am expecting a fairly warm and early spring with a mid to late freeze.
Me too. 10 repots down, 10 to go!

Thread tax. I put a bit more wire on this hawthorn. It is my third session working it, as the weather just won’t behave—usually I can work outside with the Seattle spit rain, but it’s been raining heavy (0.8” last night!) or just too damn cold to handle wire.

This was last week here.

Grrrrrrrrrrrr
The beavers have demolished almost all the BC seedlings I planted last year. The seedlings are just budding and were looking really good.

This is WAR!

Sorry. The no gore etiquette overrides the picture rule for this thread.

Watched the cranes fly north (no picture as I was enjoying the moment) and pinched a maple (horrible picture), spring has arrived.
