I was looking thru our latest National Geographic issue and came across a story about the Ghost Forests (Cypress) in the south and southeast. Excellent photos and great write up on what has been taking place since prehistoric times and what is being done to save it...

I finally got the walls up on the shed. We began in the morning, but then had to hide inside when temps hit 98°. Once my head started pounding and I couldn't figure out where to drive in the next screw it was time for the mid day break. 20230903_194911.jpg

While we were getting everything shimmed and level one of my Carolina mantis babies returned. Not so tiny anymore. My girlfriend was yelling a lot of expletives and I was so excited "My baby returned! I'm such a proud momma!" My nexdoor neighbor's edible was kicking in and she was laughing at the whole thing.

I also watered three times and dropped some carnivorous plants (and a couple extras) off at the local plant shop to sell.

Visited the elm I ground layered in the asphalt jungle. Gave it some water, no rain for a while here. It looks good. All of them around it have yellowing leaves due to heat and time of year.
All while a couple of turkey vultures looked down on me.

Went on to a railroad crossing beyond an industrial park near by.
There is a swing boom gate on the left side of the track and a wide ditch full of water on the right with wooded strips on both sides.
Got a me some trees. Small yellow poplar, lead plant, maybe tupelo and red maple, dogwood and sweet gum. The maple, dogwood and sweet gum on the ditch side - it looks like the roots were trying to escape the wetness and were slayed out horizontally with lots of feeders.

Got "caught" by a state trooper driving away. He bloked my way out, got out and walked over. By this time I was parked and meekly awaiting with my window down.
He asked what I was doing and I sheepishly said that I stopped to dig up a couple trees to plant by the house with the evidence bluntly presented in the back of my car.

Asked him it it was okay. He said it was okay as long as I wasn't beyond the gate, to which I said I was not, fibbing, and asked if I can go.
He said yes, you are fine dear. I could be his mother by age, but l take it. My car is filthy and full of ant, but I am happy.
Probably won't do it again anytime soon...

Separated a ground layer of a coral bark maple. We're just starting the post-heat 2nd growing season and prob have two months growing left so I thought it was safe. Besides, this was on five stilt-like roots. Ground layer or death for this one.

Didn't get great radial growth, but got some roots on all sides.

And, separated.

Weeded, fertilized, reorganized the trees on the benches since the sun's angle is starting to change. I also repotted two small serissa and cleaned up the vegetable beds in preparation for fall vegetables. I will give the deciduous trees their last trim this week.

Today I removed the root binding from a kazan satsuki that I am trying to develop into a semi cascade neagari.

The first root exposure had the roots spread very wide (see below in flower) so I’m hoping to get them to gather more closely together so I can add some movement next season.
