What did you do today? Show us Pic Required

Returned to my docent gig at our club's bonsai display pavilion at
Meadowlark Botanical Gardens .

While there I did another trim on my Murraya paniculata...this baby is on a tear of rampant growth this summer. It should have another flush of blossoms in about a month, the 3rd time this year!

Ain't got no "before" pic but this one was moppy, too. Took off a couple of wonky lower branches and...well... ;)

That middle one has been a scrawny devil since years and years. MIGHT be JBP but not certain. Have had varying opinions.

Anyhow, that's what got did today. :)

Pretty great photos and wonderful backgrounds, huh? 😄

I separated these two air layers. Both had only roots on one side.
Wired up this flat of Japanese Beauty Berry seedlings.
Walked in a lot of circles too.

I potted up a BC cutting today. It only put out one root but I’m not complaining. I find it interesting that no callous formed, it just popped a root out the side of the trunk. I drilled two drainage holes about an inch up the sides of this dish so it stays wet.

Collected a clumpy forsythia... as if they come any other way...

Thread started for it...

Went to the Milwaukee Annual Club Show and had a blast catching up with all my bonsai friends. Most of them I had just seen at Chicago last week.

I did a workshop with Bjorn today and took my awkward limber pine to work on

And I'm super stoked with how it turned out! I think I just needed confirmation that the massive left branch had to go because that was the thing I hated the most about it.

Decided to check on an airlayer for my Black Hills Spruce. I was excited to find some roots growing finally after months of waiting.

So I gave it some more room to grow the roots into. I'll probably separate it in the spring. Our winters are pretty mild generally hitting the mid 20s as our lowest of the season.

Sadly my 'Flaky' Fir airlayer failed and the whole branch died. Not what I was hoping for, but not unexpected. I'll try again next year on the upper portion of the trunk and see if I'll get some roots. If that fails, then I'll probably just accept the graft and have it as a specimen tree rather then a show piece.

Went to the final day of the Milwaukee Bonsai Society’s Annual Exhibit to pick up my trees and catch up with Bjorn. Loaded the trees back up and finalized agreement for the acquisition of Bjorn’s iconic One Seed Juniper known as The Tornado. Waiting on recent photos as it’s been allowed to grow out through this year but below are some previous photos of it.

I have been making a bench for my bonsai and added water irrigation as I'm going away for ten days, I'm still fine tuning to irrigation system and need to set up water for my Maple I know I need to give to bench a coat of stain for water protection but I will do that in the winter when I move the trees to a sheltered place I also need to make another bench when I get back from holiday this one will be painted before it goes out sidewater irrigation1.jpg

Look the elm kept blowing over in the wind so I hot melt glued it to a brick, works a treat elm needs a hair cut and the Japanese Larch and White Pine are going along to club worshop on Thursday evening

Technically it was yesterday, but I took a jump on a new planting style; root over rock.

This benjamina has been slowing down a bit and needing a bit more room to stretch it's roots. Additionally, I have been just hacking on it and learning since it was a wee cutting. It's still wee, but a bit closer to passing for an older specimen.

This one has been grown indoors from a cutting. It's no more than 2 years in age.

It also resides in a pot that I made with a perlite dust and cement mixture that I'm excited about. More pots on the schedule today!

Technically, it was yesterday, but went to the Ann Arbor bonsai show. This Jack Sustic tree was my favorite.

Had a bonsai club meeting yesterday and took some time to work on this one. Still a ways off but wanted to sort out of some of the main branches. This is my only ficus and I'm loving it because it grows like a weed here. Still need to nail down the front.

I'm sure I read some where that Junipers and other trees can take 2 to 3 years to airlayer and some will only be prop from seed
