Many different elm species, live oak, bald cypress, trident maple (especially a "colder" zone 9), Acer rubrum (if you want a challenge as far as successful bonsai creation/styling), Nyssa sylvatica, Japanese Black Pine, Pinus clausa, just to name a few.

Oh, and Southern Sugar maple (Acer floridanum) should do well there, but may be difficult to develop into an excellent bonsai (I am trying anyways).

You've got to nip that stuff right in the bud ASAP!!

Just do it!!
I always tell my wife I could be a bass fisherman and have a bass boat full of beer in the driveway, but I choose to waste my money messing around with trees in pots instead... works every time;).
I'm both. Bass fisherman complete with bass boat. No beer but full of tackle.
And plays with pots and little trees.
