The Bonsai Guy stolen out of business, apparently

FWIW, the beginning and end of shows/exhibitions like this are the most vulnerable time for thefts. I worked trade shows for quite a while. Nothing like having a $20,000 video display "disappear" while on its way to a truck...

Also, there is, somewhere on the web, a pic of a short ugly woman hustling away with a tree from a pallet of bonsai trees being readied to load onto a truck.

That is shitty!

Buut.. I agree with the timing. Seen a few shows being broken down and in the chaos that follows minutes after doors closing.. You better get your trees out asap

That aspect bothered me too. I have done shows on other things and would NEVER let any time pass after the time alotted to remove your items.
It puts it in a category of a tragic event that could have been averted.

Not right, but security has to be the exhibitor's main responsibility.

:(
According to the article, if it is accurate, the venue gave them Monday to clear their stuff out. He left it until Tuesday. If true, I am sure they told the vendors and exhibitors that. So if that deadline was ignored, it's not the fault of the show organizers.

Most of these shows operate on a tight budget so providing security for an extra day beyond when you have rented the space is probably out of the question.

They caught a guy in Florida who walked away with a big tree the last day of a show. Eyewitness accounts and security footage identified his vehicle, and police showed up at his house and nabbed him. He didn't own any bonsai trees, and it was unclear what he planned to do with the tree in question (which was a large display of Brazilian rain trees). Felony grand theft. Ouch.

On a related note… does anyone ever try to insure more expensive trees? Seems like a tough sell as a simple error in care could lead to a loss but maybe insured just against theft or vandalism?

Genuine question, is that covered under homeowner's or renter's insurance?

Insurance companies would have to deal with "perceived value vs true value".

Where are the hard and fast rules that state how to evaluate a bonsai's true value...ive never seen any?
It's all based on perceived value with no set market guidelines or standards as to how to value a bonsai...not a good game to play if you're an insurance company.

what are you doing to change the situation of our government?

both if you have an umbrella policy. Most insurance cover up to a certain amount, mine covers up to 20, 000 and it is the least expensive plan state farm has currently, costing me about 75$ every 6 months.

As mentioned, homeowners may cover a small hobby bonsai collection. However, homeowner's will not cover past a certain dollar amount and will likely not cover a bonsai business. So a theft from your sales table would not be covered. Trees are "livestock" or an 'agricultural product" as such are perishable. Long term policy for them at the house may be expensive talk to your agent. However, you can get term insurance, like a farmer does when traveling to farmers market, it will cover catastrophic loss just for the time away from the house. This should be cheap even for an expensive Bonsai collection.

Funny. I remembered the thief as a woman. Anyway, he's not happy about being arrested from the look on his face in his mug shot.

LOL - yes, I have a memory of it being a white van, and the bonsai being a large ficus. It was only after I re-read the article that I realized I was wrong on both counts :)

Aww. I didn’t mean to upset you, sweetheart. Sounds like you’re having a rough day. Perhaps a nap or having a good cry would help you process your feelings.

Lightweights like you usually get me going.....

what are you doing to change the situation of our government?

about the same as you, hero.....

Really? Grinding that ax almost four months later? Jeez...
Makes me wonder why I'm bothering to pay the mortgage when I can so easily live rent-free in someone's head for months... 🤷‍♂️
