The new new NEW guy (tiger bark ficus pre-bonsai)

Can you still find that size for $5? I wanted to get 10 but missed on the spot I knew of

Here are the larger $5 ones...

They also sell 1 gallon ones for $7.87 plus shipping. The shipping is pretty steep if you live on the far side of the country, but understandable give the weight of the plants. That's why I like the 4" size. I can get 8 delivered to me for under $75 total cost.

Welcome! Not to be a party pooper, but it will be years before you can/should really do much of anything "bonsai" to that plant. Perhaps a little wire for movement, as someone suggested, but mostly it just needs plain old gardening - let it grow. I would recommend you also acquire a tree that is much further along as a bonsai, so you can learn and enjoy the skills of maintaining/refining a bonsai while you wait for the opportunity to practice creating one . . .

I hope this is the beginning of a great hobby for you ;)

Awesome. Thanks everyone! I'm going to look into different types of plants... The wife said no to ordering 100 more though.

I was definitely already becoming attached to this guy, thinking of a name and everything lol

You guys don't think its to soon to start wiring? I was mainly just going to repot it with some good hi quality soil and nutrients and just focus on fattening it up and waiting to see what happens until next year.

I even attempted to collect rain water last night... no success

Also, any brands of soil that yall recommend? I know there is both a Lowe's and Home Depot nearby... I started reading the thread on the introductory into soils and now my head hurts. Just looking for something you guys know and trust!

If it was me I would wire the trunk to add a little curve or something. You could get real crazy depending on what you want long term. As far as soil that depends kinda. Your going to want more development from it so I would go as is. Bonsai soil will slow that some. Let it grow for now. This is a crap pic of one I picked up not long ago.IMG_20170307_182638592.jpgI'm going to keep this one small so the long top will come off this summer. I still want it to bulk up more so letting it grow. Hope that helps. Take it with a grain of salt I'm still fairly new to this as well

Sorry for all the questions, thanks everyone for all of your patience with me. Going to look in the wiring forum.

Exactly just looking for developing now. So really any kind of garden center soil would do?

I think so just watch watering. Hopefully others with more experience will add their thoughts

I've got mine in NAPA Oil Dry and potting soil mixed in about one third. It's grown well in just one year. It came in that black water glass size pot from walmart for 5 dollars. before and after pics. Outside all summer and doing very well in a south facing window for winter. The pot it's in actually has a small plastic training pot inside. Roots growing out of the pot and down the sides. Good fun lil tree.
I post this only to show what they can do in a years time in a small pot and to be encouraging.

@Underdog

What's up with the vine and pineapple thing? Upper left.

Are they like bench warmers? Sit there and never gets to play? :p

The pineapple is a Sago Palm and it looks exactly like a Pineapple. They go out in summer. Pineapple just got a repot larger.
The vine is a 3 gal goldfish bowl full of several plants. far left I just shove cuttings in there and they take off. The large ficus is growing out the top was a cutting from the previous tree discussed. There is a Crowton taking off, a dwarf Shef and the vine is unknown but one of my late mothers plants I keep going with cuttings. Too many spider plants but sentimental in the same way.

I've seen this Napa soil listed a bunch of different places. I think I will go with that if I can find it between now and mid-summer locally.

Very nice with the curves, you guys dont think its to soon to start curving?

And that's an insane setup!!!... showed it to the wife and she just gave me the looko_O... maybe that was to much to soon for her :D lol

I'll also agree that the NAPA 8822 diatomaceous earth is awsome! I just repotted a bunch of trees that were in it and all of their energy roots were amazing!20170306_155947.jpg
Super dense feeders:D

Part number 8822 Napa will stock it, sift with the wife's spaghetti colander when she is not around. Don't skip this step. I did once and mushy mess. I also sift the potting soil some.

You could wire your trunk now and add some curves now then get it outside every day above 50 degrees you can. Best to repot in summer with tropicals.

ditto I had many in 100 percent oild dry and the roots went crazey. Bought another bag this spring. It is also reusable. Dry it out and sift and reuse. Then again it's 8 bucks for a huge bag... goes in my landscape areas along with the sifted fines.

I did cough up for some lava this year for some of my improving trees put in bonsai pots. More for color and to maybe airiate a bit better.

Alright guys, I hate to bring this old post back up.

We had a day in the 80s so I gave the plant a nice day outside but still to cold for full time outside conditions so its back inside lol....

But I came across this on craigslist and wanted to know if you guys think one of these fixtures would be good enough to support the needed CFL bulb for indoor growth. My thinking is 3 separate lights could lead to 3 separate plants throughout the house, maybe the wife won't notice lol :D
