The 2022 5 year discount rack contest

Haha!!! I suppose...!

The Delmarva area is notoriously wealthy, correct?

I could be way off.

Yes and no. There’s a lot of cities in the area. DC is an hour from Baltimore is an hour from Wilmington is a half hour from Philadelphia is two hours from NYC. The I-95 corridor is mostly wealthy suburbs. The inner cities are inner cities. The Delmarva Peninsula has beach towns, but it’s otherwise almost entirely agricultural and maritime. My parents are both teachers, so I didn’t grow up on a farm, but I grew up nestled between four farms.

The problem is that I either drive into town to visit a pricey suburban nursery, or I collect from the woods. We have Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, etc., but they don’t tend to put things on clearance. The plants typically die before they can get to that point. I just can’t say that I’ve ever seen a dedicated clearance shelf at a garden center or nursery, partly because I don’t want to pay for Chinese plants when I can collect native plants for free.

By me we have Gerten’s nursery with a couple locations. It’s a very big nursery, and has a clearance section year round. FDAFDF84-FF42-4FEA-9854-F57E43EA030A.jpegA39AF45B-30A5-490D-A54F-7257F14D1534.jpeg
I’m in as soon as they put out this years inventory! 😁

That’s my problem here. We only have one Lowe’s and that’s the only place I’ve seen a discount rack

Or I wait until fall when WalMart discounts their stuff over 50% to liquidate their inventory (which I did pretty well on last yr getting 5 boxwoods and 3 bottlebrush)

Looked at Lowe’s yesterday. The clearance racks were populated with wilting flowers and a half brown yew, lol

Might get lucky (was able to buy a $40 oak at the nursery last year that was looking really sorry for $5. Looking great this year), but like I said in the other post, I may just have to start late on this contest by waiting until fall when plants get liquidated for winter

Best of luck on finding 2. You need one to try that 8822 on.

If we got it moved up we could post out tree threads in.
I'm getting ready to tuck mine in the ground for 2 or 3 years and just let it run wild for a year and then bring it back a little here and there

Now serious anyone knows whats the deal about those ridiculous overprized bonsai? money laundering? 🤣
I got a good one for sale. Its already entered in this contest. I would let someone that can't find a discount tree, join this contest with a possible pre bonsai award winner for the low price of $85 of course shipping is not included. :)

Hey hey now!! It sounds like too much tom foolery is going on in here 🤣

Nurseries and the big box stores are just starting to put plants out here, no discount racks here for awhile, but you all have fun.

Live Oak 1. $7. Blue box store. It looks like it died right around the blue ribbon, which was very tight and cutting into the trunk. They basically chopped it for me.

Live Oak 2. $7. Blue box store. Pretty good looking tree. Not sure why it was in the discount area.

Laurel Oak 1. $7. Blue box store. This tree is probably a gonner. The pot is 90% roots and was clearly underwatered. These trees are often seen growing on the edge of wetlands here where I live. You will see them in the transition area and see the Cypress a bit farther in in the water. They are like the weeping willow of the south. I now have this pot standing in an inch of water to see if these leaves pop back. I bought it knowing it's probably dead. I bought it anyway because of the nebari, decent taper, and I have savior complex and get deep satisfaction from saving dying trees.

Wait. Do online discounts count? I just remembered the stuff I bought from Mr. Maple back in March was discounted. I’ll of course double check that it was on clearance, rather than one of those 10% promotional deals. I’m pretty sure I still have the invoice in my fire-starting paper pile.

@DanaWhicker thats what I’m talking about! Damn nice finds! I wish we could get some live oaks in our stores.

@Gabler we are sticking to brick and mortar stores. Online does not count.

@Kullas was it in their discount section or marked as clearance? Just because it was inexpensive does not mean it was clearance.
