The 2022 5 year discount rack contest

I purchased this discounted juniper last summer at a landscape nursery.
I know it wasnt purchased in 2022, but I have not done anything to the tree until today other than water it.
Saw it today when I was walking around the yard and thought of this contest, but didnt realize the rule was had to be purchased in 2022.
Would you allow this entry? If you want to stick with the strict adherence to purchase in 2022, I understand

Hi all hope I can still join in, didn't find this post until I'd already cut my acer back so no before pic sorry. Once I removed about an inch of bark chippings it even had the beginnings of some nebari too!

A picture of the price label should be a rule too 😤
While I agree to an extent I buy most of my stuff from the Amish and when it’s in the scrap pile they just usually say, will you buy it for x? And it’s a yes or a no lol. I get it though. Love having a handful of Amish nurseries around me.

Any limit on the number of entries? I picked up a bunch of trees and might as well enter them all to make sure I work on as all them instead of letting them sit around. :-)

Sounds good. A side question.

What if you bought a parent tree with the intent to air layer it and chop it. That would create two trees? I actually have 3 trees I’m intending to try this will but we are at the wrong time of year for this obviously and I found this contest late. Granted may not have enough time to fully develop a chopped tree but I’m going to be doing it either way. This will keep some pressure on me to focus on them and not fall behind.

Curious of your thoughts.

Yes air layers off a discount tree are allowed but I think it would only be fair if you were only allowed to enter one piece of the tree, not all three pieces. Here’s an example of a similar situation, I bought a clump crepe myrtle for $5. I separated it into 5 individual trees but I only entered a single one into the contest.

Ok I’m back with my second contender. -first one https://www.bonsainut.com/threads/will’s-5-year-discount-rack-entry-‘pieris-japonica-mountain-fire’.55526/- is dead.

Round 2. I have a Sabina juniper ‘scandia’ I nabbed a couple weeks ago.
