I'm loving the contests here on Bonsai Nut. Count me in. Do I need to purchase the "discount rack" tree, or can it be a freebie that someone is trying to get rid of?

Sweet, me and Shogun610 raided the $5 clearance pile at a nursery a few weeks ago. I'm entering my European hornbeam. This is a picture of when I bought it, I don't have a pic of the repot and chop in my phone but I'll snap one tomorrow morning and post it here. was super rootbound and hasn't started growing yet.

Same. I was able to get a lot of material for almost nothing in the fall
Here, discounted stuff is material that missed a few too many waterings and getting crispy, lol
I’ll keep my eye out though. I’m in for this if I can find a good piece

almost forgot to add the real pic. Extremely slow to wake up this spring but it is still alive. Tons of extra shit going on right now but I didn’t want to cut off all the buds, not super familiar with this species, so I’m being safe. Heading toward an oak tree type style I think. Lots of carving to do next spring if she seems stable

Same here. Where I live "discounted" is the same as "pre-killed," as in "we already killed it for you so you don't need to kill it at home.

We have lowes here and they are always putting stuff on clearance just to make room for new stuff. Nothing wrong with it except it is taking up room. They also put stuff on there to die too. It’s a crap shoot of what you can find.

Is there a limit on max dollar amount/how big of a discount? My local garden center had this Sand Cherry/ Prunus Besseyi 'PO11s' at 20% off $65 (so $52) today. If it's deemed an inappropriate entry I'll certainly bow out, but I was blown away by the trunk structure on this lil gal.
