Stainless pot.

Thanks @Carol 83 that's plenty of info to go on. And a beautiful plant you have there! @HorseloverFat there will "hypothetically" be more, I'm still having a hard time visualizing what to put in this one... I have a very small maple that might look nice, come summer.
Thanks, very cool pot also.

Cool little pot, 12 gauge?

Agree with BNut about the SS, probably not good for a "tree", although may be cool for some flashy accent plant?

A588 sheet(CoreTen) would be an excellent choice of material if you had access to it without buying an entire sheet.

@Mike Westervelt 16 gauge (.060"). I know the shop I work at has a514, which should act similarly, just not entirely sure if we have the a514 in a thin enough material.
@Michael P I will keep that in mind. I made a pair of these and gave the one to a very close friend, but want to make more, a few bigger ones as well, maybe even ovals.
@sorce I work in a pretty full bore fab shop, though we don't have bead rollers or the sort. I do forge and bladesmith however, and have already been toying with the idea of forging out the "bowl" shape. Maybe I'll invest in a bead roller to do some flared sides. The parts for this pot were waterjet cut (pretty cool tool to have access too) which made life mostly painless.
@Graft yes Corten is crazy expensive, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we have some at the shop 🤞🤞🤞🤞

Thanks! Even if you use a typical steel, the pots will be very durable. I don't know what type of steel and what thickness plow discs are made from, but doesn't seem to be anything special. Those things last for decades. I can imagine ovals, rectangles, and slabs.

full bore fab shop,

Nice. I think it would be fun to figure what kind of strip you need to cut to bang out a slightly flared rounded corner rectangle with just one weld seam. Too much waste though. Maybe just cut the four walls and quarter round the edge and have 4 welds. Like...exposed for a rope like effect down the edge.

I never tigged but I've watched .....more than I care to admit! 🤚👀

I was wondering how you shaped those feet. That's pimp.

Sorce

Here I go again with my shenanigans. After the positive feedback from everyone I'm gonna try whipping up three 6" steel rounds pots and one rectangle. The hope is,get everything cut today, formed and welded tomorrow. I'll keep my fingers crossed that it all works out 🤞🤞

Anyway here are a few photos of the water jet running, yes very dull

Cool pots, cool idea, cool to have another PA enthusiast. Looked up Green Lane PA, says population 508 (in 2010) haha that can't be true

edit: im now seeing the size of the borough, makes more sense for your county

@PA_Penjing Green Lane is for sure a tiny little town as you saw when you looked it up. I'm not all that far from Bethlehem to be honest. And thanks, I'm digging making these pots so far, though they are purely an "afterwork when I don't have to rush home and help out with the kids or start working at my small business" kind of endeavor.

@Carol 83 I love been in small towns. We don't have a nursing home, though it's very white haired around here 😉

Just saw this thread. Nice!

It got me thinking that a english wheel and planishing hammer could probably make some nice round pots. I have never really worked with stainless, just made Harley fenders and the sort in my work, so I don't know how easy it is to use those with stainless steel.

@bonsainut I glad you were pleasantly surprised. The idea of a patina has me thinking about steels that surface rust, and then rust no further (corten for an example). I may have to pick up a bit and give it a try. @AZbonsai 115 f is why I've never been to Arizona 😉.
Cool pot, cool idea about corten steel, ever thought about colouring the steel with a blow torch

@Moridin sadly, I don't have access to, nor have I ever used either an english wheel or a planishing hammer. I'm might grab a bead roller, though my worry is the thickness I am making the pots would necessitate one heck of a tough roller. Stainless does have a tendency to move as it wants when being formed more than steel does. I'm toying with the idea of forging in some radiused sides on some round pots, but we shall see how much time I am able to find for pot making. @Lutonian right now I'm just running a few more in plain old steel before I pick up corten. The torch idea isn't a bad one. There are some blacksmithing finishes that might be cool and only use beeswax and heat to achieve which should be safe to trees and might be way cool. It's a similar finish to cast iron.

Yes there are lots of finish types that could work like acid etching etc. I will be looking forward to your future creations

I do a ton of etching on my handmade knives and am "a little tired of" the look. However, I'll give one of these a go with etching to scratch your itch 👍. I really love the idea of have what looks like a cast iron pot and am planning that for the rectangle/slab inspired pot I'll be hopefully not screwing the pooch on, this afternoon. (read: trying to weld up properly)

Finished up fabrication on this slab inspired steel pot. I have a few round steel pots to finish to see how they finish out. I'm planning to sandblast this one and then think long about what kind of finish I'd like to put on this.
