It's definitely Acer truncatum, Shantung maple.

The leaves on mine aren't completely open yet, but I can get pics tomorrow. New growth and bark are exact matches.
I thought I recognized it, I just didn't know the common name. I have one I started from seed 30 ish years ago from seed collected from the US Arboretum.

I checked with the nursery owner. He said he ordered red maple “Acer rubrum” from a wholesale nursery. That place also grows Acer truncatum and labels them red maple as well for sale in the north TX area where the Acer truncatum is designated as Texas star tree. The tree I got was a mix-up in the order.

I am glad I didn’t bargain down the price on him. He told me he was surprised I agreed to buy it at the price he asked. He was ready to lower the price to get rid of it. Win win I think.

Very smart of you to trace it back to the source to confirm the identity. Did you mean Texas State tree or Star tree? Either way it is peculiar that a tree from Northern China would achieve such a status in Texas.

You could have gotten it for even cheaper!?!? Excellent work tracing the species down.

Now I need to read up on this species to familiarize myself with it. I really like the leaves after seeing a close up and the bark is a plus.

Interesting article on cultivars of Acer truncatum

I have been researching it since last night.
