Thank you @Deep Sea Diver. I will follow all precautions! I'm stepping up to this level of treatment because this tree is special.

I've been unable to keep the foliage out of the rain and we've had some soakers. The good news is that the rust has not returned. I have not applied the fungicide and frankly I don't want to unleash that stuff if I don't have to. I'll continue with copper every few weeks but fingers crossed that the tree is and will stay rust free.

The tree has healthy looking growth and there's been no return of the rust. Here are some recent photos.

JFYI will kick in during wet spells. It’s another reason not to water foliage at night.
