Top twig after season outside with escaped ground roots.

It is nearly the same size as the trunk.
Surely big enough to be a next taper section.

I only have a few growing tips on the roots I tucked under.
With all that energy stored over summer...
I could have easily whacked them all off without harm.

Hence the full colander in ground next year....Dwilling. (dwelling willing)

@AZbonsai what I would do different....

I should have chopped this on the angle first.
Typically we flat cut to promote backbudding, cutting the angle later to a new bud or branch.
I had the other trunk, and got no buds, I should've made the angle cut before the callous got going so well.

When you cut into a big callous...it tends to die in the center and begin to grow around that too....essentially giving you another "wound" to close.
I found some spots like that on this tree, and they seem to heal well enough, and it adds character, but I only want fast healing for this.

I must wait now, or graft a branch where I need it, before I make the last trunk chop. I want to cut it back to the "new leader" next, and I will wait till it is at least an inch thick before cutting to it.
That way the last chop heals fast.

Pretty sure you are going to have shaved a few year off this things training.
Even if this one doesn't take!

I wrapped it in a light plastic wire tie to keep the crooked bud straight and aid in getting it through.

Washed my bit, and exacto with alcohol.
Drilled the hole, And cleaned it up.

I kinda screwed up in that I already had branching on those first 2 nodes, cut em, Then the growing tip is after those....I'm pretty sure this will bud at the swell anyway, it does eveywhere else.
I scraped the cambium and wedged it to the side I want it to grow, about 2:30.
Is that ok?

A little holder wire.
No worries, at frigging some 80lbs, I'm not moving it for a while!

Position on the tree, hopefully a new lead.
I prepped that other left low branch for a possible future graft.

And right under the light till it's over 50F!


And since we can load mad pictures now!
If any of those cuttings root, I'll be grafting roots too!

I can't see too well in your pics if there are any leaves lefton that graft. I did this on my benjamana and it didn't take. I think some ficus need a leaf to continue growing.
I hope your project has a happier ending than that movie.

Sweet graft..... I resisted the urge yesterday to grab one of these at the depot....thought of this tree when I saw them....

Hindsight....

I was only prepping this last night...
But decided to give it a go!

I should have, and could easily have, parafilmed those branches in and threaded it all thru....as in

I will use that method next time, probably sooner than later.

And do you see any downfalls to using a branch with a leaf and a bud on it for the wedger?
I figure if it takes too what the hell!
If not, it can't be any worse than just a budless wedge.

So the thread graft failed.

But this branch I cut half way thru bent the shit out of and nailed into place....up the crack...
That one lived!

I'm gonna do the thread graft for the apex right this growing season. Except, I don't want to use it...except for a safety for the chop. I will use a natural branch for the apex.

Really looking forward to finally getting that damn post off the top! We'll see!
