Prunus Mume

Stunning. Did it bloom last year the same month or is it early this year ?
Thanks, it’s about 2 weeks late this year. It has reliably bloomed for New Year’s.
I think wiring it out last year and not repotting it weakened It a little.

That’s interesting that you say that as the tree looks amazing. I know you mentioned you use 3/4 akadama soil if I read correctly. Do you think that type of soil needs replacement yearly other than what’s been stated? I did a lot of reading and some say the quality of akadama is key because it can turn to mush quickly hurting the Healy of the tree if it is not the hardened/fired clay. I have also read that mume for mature trees like yours should be reported every 2 to 5 years but this is where I get lost because I don’t see how the soil stays intake that long. In any case looking forward to see what you do as I look up to you master bonsai keepers.

Ume is a heavy feeder, and requires lots of water. This contributes to the necessity of repotting regularly. I have never had akadama “turn into mush” so while I’ve heard the claim, I’ve never seen it. I do not prune the roots much at all, but rather just tease them out, and replace the soil. This year it’s going into a larger pot, and I hope it will regain some vigor.

When you say regularly you mean yearly or every other year? I think your tree is simply amazing so what ever your doing it’s is working.

Brian, mine haven’t started blooming yet. The flower buds are swelling, not I haven’t had one open yet.

I think they’re just running late this year, for whatever reason. Mine usually open around the middle of January. We’re past that now, so it will be the end of January for mine, I think.

Same goes for mine. Also seems to be later this year

Mine are also late this year, even the 30 foot tree tree I have in the landscape is just opening now. They usually are open before Christmas here.
